The Friday Five!

1. I have long suspected it, but now, via the Newsweek website, here is proof: YA books are hot. It's a great time to be writing for teens, and I have to say I could not be happier that this is my job. There's so much great stuff out there now to read, and so many amazing authors. My feeling is, the more voices, the better the chance that every teen will find something they can relate to. And that is a GREAT thing.

2. Thanks so everyone who wrote in with suggestions for new shows for me to watch. I have to say, though, that a couple of people warned me about getting into Everwood, as there is only one season available on DVD, and they feared I would get totally hooked (they know me well) and then be disappointed that I couldn't watch the rest. So maybe I should wait until more are available, and just watch LOST or The Wire instead? Decisions, decisions....

3. Just a final reminder that I'll be at McIntyre's Fine Books, at Fearrington, in Pittsboro, this coming Sunday, the 18th, at 2pm. (Good God there were a lot of commas in that sentence. Sorry!) It's my last local event for awhile so come out if you can. And, as I mentioned before, there will be cows. Not that I'm bringing any personally: they live there. But still, always a bonus.

4. Yesterday, we had to go get some paperwork done for an insurance thing. I was sitting with this one woman who was filling out forms and I happened to look over as she was writing. Her handwriting was SO PERFECT. I just had to comment on it. She laughed and said, "It's the nuns!" Apparently, penmanship was big in the Catholic school she attended. Personally, after having several letters returned because the mailman couldn't read my writing, and my husband basically going on strike as far as grocery shopping because he couldn't read my list, I have begun to write in ALL CAPS for CLARITY. It slows me down, makes me take more care. Still not as perfect as the insurance woman's. But I am not shooting for perfect these days. In fact, I'm working on a pass/fail kind of mentality, which is much less stressful. By those standards, I'm doing Just Fine, thank you. And it is enough.

5. Finally, my daughter has now progressed to babbling. Her newest thing to say is, "Da-da." Now, I know she's just making noises. But I still find myself responding by saying, "Ma-ma. Ma-ma!" Yesterday I was feeding her, and I said, "Mama is your favorite! Ma-ma!" She smiled all big and said, "Da-da! Da-Da!" So there you go. To be honest, my husband has always been the favorite. He is friendlier and funnier and better at housecleaning. But I was hoping for an edge with the person who CAME FROM MY BODY. Guess not. But that's okay! It's still a high pass, right?

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Good article about Generation R and nice bit of you in it.

My mother has the best handwriting and I always feel like I should try harder to live up to her standards but it's no use...

If you try hard enough, you could probably mind most Everwood episodes online somewhere. I would recommend Psych, because it's really funny, and, if you've never watched it, Arrested Development, because it's amazing. I'm not sure if Psych is on DVD (I've been watching online), but I know all three seasons of AD are.

just FYI - my mom and a friend from school LOVED everwood...and both were told season one would be the only season released - so unless you're willing to desperately track episodes down online...probably not a good bet because you WILL be addicted.

Two more suggestions of shows to watch if you don't already: Veronica Mars (all 3 seasons are out on DVD already, but the show was cancelled so there's no more after that), and Bones (not your average catch the bad guy show. it's so character driven that figuring out who the bad guy is and why he/she did it is just a suspensful bonus. Also David Boreanaz is so good looking. hehe).

Hope that helps.

everwood is SO good. so good. but i made the mistake of watching it on dvd. there i was plowing through season one, updating my netflix que constantly. and then, as i approached the final disk, i went to search out season two only to find it is not out there in the world and might not be made at all. no season 2. or 3. it was like a little piece of my heart was ripped off and thrown in the gutter.

It's a really awesome site! We also have a YNoWriMo (Young Writers Novel Writing Month) which is a play-off of the National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo). Except in this one, it will take place from June 1st to July 31st and you have to write 25K. And prizes will be distributed to all members involved.

Join, it's extremely fun!

LOL!
1. There are a lot of great new authors. 2. Yeah...I was one of those people. You could get hooked if you wanted. I did a while back when they were playing Everwood on ABC Family, but, for some reason the station stopped playing it. :( 3. Too bad I don't live anywhere near there or I would go. ;( 4. I hate it when people have perfect hand writing, then they comment on hand writing of those who were not gifted with amazing penmanship. ;) LOL! I've seen your hand writing before...(a personalized-signed copy of lock in key you sent to me...also the envelope) and it's very similar to mine. Very loopy and smooth...lol. 5. LOL! That reminds me of my mom...my two older sisters and I both said "Da-da" before we said "ma-ma." I was suprised when she told me I did because Im the biggest mama's girl ever...LOL! She'll say "ma-ma" eventually...dont worry, dear. :)
Have a great day!
Much love!

I have a suggestion for shows you can watch. Neither of them are on TV anymore, but that doesn't mean they weren't great while they lasted: Dead Like Me, which had two seasons and has a movie coming out now, and Tru Calling, which had one full season and then a second not-completed season. Unfortunately, both were canceled. Ohh! Another canceled show that was amazing was Wonderfalls! I'm the patron saint of lost-cause TV shows.

Also, I have a completely non-related-to-your-post question: I'm reading Lock and Key right now, and I was talking about it with my friends, and I brought up how in most of your books, you mentions a character (or characters) from another book. We were wondering why, exactly, you do that.

If you haven't seen it yet, Chuck, on NBC(?) is awesome. A show I think you'd like, because of the writers strike they only got in a half season but it will be back this fall. Smallville, Supernatural, Heroes, House, Criminal Minds, CSI: NY, Law and Order: SVU, Survivor (Very Addicting, theres 17 seasons, I suggest them for summer, you'll be hooked), Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, ANTM. These are like all the shows I watch, and I know these shows will be back next fall, too. Guaranteed.

Heres a link to all the new, canceled, and returning shows this fall:

http://www.imdb.com/news/flash/

and I guess if you don't like the crime shows then of the ones I said above: Chuck, Smallville (The beginning Seasons are awesome, Clark Kent *faint*), SUpernatural (Tis is a scary-ish show, beware), Heroes, House, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, ANTM, and of course Survivor ( I swear, you have got to try this show, It's awesome.)

Hopefully this gives you some insight....

The truth about forever
This had been the 2nd book i have read of your this month and once i again i find myself drowned in a book of page after page wanting to know more. my first book i was read "dreamland" and like almost every chapter made me cry, cringe with affection , and most of all fall in love with the characters. I love how you make up these guy characters that i fall totalyy in love with such as "wes" and "rogerson"( without all the abuse and smoking part). Wes was my favorite of all who seemed like the dream boy that every girl would wish of having. So keep up the good work and i cant wait to read all your other books!

A Note From Ali
I love young adult books. They are geared towards older teenagers, but I still enjoy them, and they are often, the only books that I read. Your books are the best that I have ever read, but I have alot of other favorites. I know that this is random but I really enjoyed, "My life as a snow bunny". I think that anyone reading not only this blog, but the coments left as well, would enjoy this book. I know that I did.

Great article! I was so happy to see that you and your books were highlighted. And while I was reading about you, it made me stop and think, here's this very successful author who can be doing anything she wants with her free time... and she still keeps up her journal which I SO much love to read! Thank you for that, really.

I also have to put in my recommendation for LOST. I just love it. However, the first few episodes might make you doubt the greatness of the show... if that's the case, hang in there. It gets much much better :)

Show recommendation
Three words: ONE TREE HILL. It's a great show and I think you might like it. The first 4 seasons are about the characters in their last 2 years of high school. And the current season revolves around the characters in their early 20s (it jumped 4 years between season 4 and 5, skipping the college years). Um what else? Oh yeah, the show takes place in North Carolina, that's gotta give it some extra points right? ;) And there's basketball.. It's a great show, I love it and you should give it a try. :)

The season finale is on Monday the 18th at 9 on the CW by the way. Season 6 is premiering on Sept. 1. :)

Sarah, I was so inlove with Gilmore girls...and then it ended I was so disappointed. But right after the finale last spring I watched the finale of One Tree Hill. And let me tell you if you like Carolina Basketball Drama, a love triangle mixed in, and just teen drama, you've got to watch One Tree Hill! It's not the same as Gilmore Girls but it close. I just finished catching up on the previous seasons 1-4, now it's in five. Trust me it's great!

My sister went through that when her daughter started talking, too. Haha. It took my baby-niece FOREVER to finally say "Mama," and it was accompanied by the angry throwing of a bowl of sliced hotdog pieces. I hope it doesn't occur that way for you, when it happens! Then again, the first time she said my name, she threw a sippy-cup at my face, so it could just be that my niece, specifically, suffers from...I don't know...acute babyrage?

I completely agree with what others have told you on the Everwood front. It is far too great a show to get addicted to, only to be stopped by the pesky "only one boxset released so far" thing. You will be saving yourself a lot of yearning and heartache and waking up screaming longingly in the middle of the night, sweat cold on your face and eyes filled with tears, if you just put it off until more DVDs were available. Just my opinion, though!

And, on a slightly unrelated note, I just want to tell you how much I love your books. I've only read three so far, but the rest are on my list, come next payday. I've been spewing your praises all over my brand-new bloggy-blog, and I'm thinkin' you've earned yourself a place as one of my favourite authors! And that's saying something, because you're up there with the likes of JD Salinger and John Knowles and the like. Amazing.

Well, take care!

Don't let the lack of Everwood DVDs deter you, because I've read that the WB is creating an online "TV channel" that will allow you to watch such former WB hits as Everwood (one of my all-time favorites, next to Gilmore Girls).

My favorite genre to read AND write would be the Young Adult too. I only discovered that when friends commented that I only write about 'high-school dating' and my poetry of choice would always be of the 'bad teen poetry' genre. There will be a time when I get this urge to buy YA books just to check out on the pattern and trends of this genre. Do you notice that the plot of supernatural teens or teen killers seem to be a hit?

I just read a simple refreshing YA book titled Life as I Knew It. It has all the elements of a YA book I love: cussing, angst, and cigarette that support the whole teenage plot of the story.
