This morning, I heard a story on NPR about how reality shows use sleep deprivation to create drama. Can I just say that, as someone who has not slept straight through a night in over eight months, that I TOTALLY understand this? Before I had my baby, I only thought of sleep deprivation as something the military used to torture people. Oh, and there was also that time that Mariah Carey had her meltdown, and once, when her publicist was dragging her away from a microphone, she was saying, "Sleep deprivation is REAL, people!" So I totally should have trusted that both the military and Mariah knew what they were talking about. But let me say, I have learned it on my own. A few nights of really fragmented sleep, plus long days, means SERIOUS trouble for me. Moodiness, weepiness...all the stuff that, yes, really does work better on a reality show than in, say, your own personal reality.

Which is why this little break I've been taking has been so nice. I have been doing a LOT of sleeping. As well as resting, which is that thing when you're NOT running around madly every waking moment, doing a hundred things at once. And you know what? Less drama. I feel better. Who knew? Next time, I will listen to Mimi.

In other news, does anyone else feel kind of cheated that we waited SO LONG for new episodes of all our shows, and now they're already doing season finales? I know it's not their fault, they only have so much time, but still. I wish I had a few more new Offices, and Greys, to hold me over for the summer. Last year, I got hooked on Brothers and Sisters, Friday Night Lights and House over the summer. This time, I'm thinking about checking out The Wire (which people who love are CRAZY in love with) and maybe Everwood, which people who love think I will love as well. It's always so fun to find a great new show, or a new to you show. I don't think anything can be as great as discovering FNL. But you never know...

Finally, because I am resting so as to avoid The Drama and don't know when I'll post next, a reminder: I'm doing my last local reading for awhile this weekend, on Sunday the 18th, at 2pm at McIntyre's Fine Books at Fearrington Village. So come out, say hello, check out the cows---always a great part of going to Fearrington---and see me in a calm, rested state. Hopefully.

I hope you are ALL having a good week. Drama-free!

Have a great day, everyone!

Oh, Everwood. That show is absolutely INCREDIBLE, and I can pretty much guarantee that you will love it. Only the first season is on DVD, but the new wb episode-streaming site should be up and running soon (I hope), and that will have all the episodes available for free, supposedly. Honestly, if you're looking for a show to watch, Everwood's it. It was cancelled long before it should have been (and Emily VanCamp from Brothers & Sisters is in it, plus it's produced by the same guy as B&S is). :-D

gosh, i would love to be able to watch all of everwood in a row. i still can't believe they cheated us out of the rest of the series on dvd, especially after it was cancelled. =( of course i probably won't even be able to watch the eppies online because i'm in canada... but still - amazing show.

oh, i hope and i pray for a day when i can rewatch old everwood episodes. especially season 2. i was going through a really hard time myself when it aired (i was a senior in high school), and watching was like the highlight of my week. amy and i were in total sync, right down to having the same name (amy, that is). i didn't have a tommy, though, which is probably for the best. but you know, still. i was so sad when that show got canceled and one tree hill got to stay. i never liked oth anyway, and it getting to stay over everwood kind of broke my heart just a little.

For me, I was a total oth AND everwood fan, so I was way more upset that 7th Heaven got to stay on for another season after they had done the whole "series finale" deal. Plus, it got cancelled the next season, and the ratings sucked. I guess the CW got what it deserved in that respect, lol.

LOST
I haven't heard you mention Lost ever, and since we're completely simpatico on pretty much EVERYTHING ELSE pop culturally, I would strongly encourage you to give it a try. I zoomed through the entire series to the present in just a few months, and now I'm absolutely riveted.

Give it a try!

Get Lost in Everwood!
I agree with the readers above-- Everwood and Lost! Everwood is SO good(and I'm almost the same age as you). It was on every night at 7 pm on the Christian TV station in Canada (I have NO clue why!) and my husband I would rush home from work to watch it. I cried when it was over. Also, I never got on the Lost bandwagon until this winter and I loved Seasons 1-3. It's like anything - totally addictive on DVD.

I'm going to agree with everyone above me and say that Everwood is amazing! I am really enjoying re-watching all the episodes on the Christian tv station in Canada (they're still on once a week). Everwood was the kind of tv show that wouldn't necessarily do crazy, shocking, attention-grabbing storylines, but would just be consistently good and heart-warming, week after week.

I'm with you; I can't believe my shows are almost over for the year! I think The Office might be my summer tv show this year.

And I totally agree with you about the sleep deprivation! I have had some really extreme sleep deprivation periods, and it's really interesting what it can do to you. Enjoy your rest and a break!

:) Sarah

Everwood is an amazing show! It's worth it! Even though it was cancled WAY before it should have been, it's amazing! Sleep deprivation is awful..I hate it. Me not getting enought sleep results in my eyelids swelling and me not being able to open my eyes for at least a half hour after I get up. I need my at least 8 eight hours...LOL!
And I also feel a little cheated as well. I mean, come on! Survivor finally came back on and it had it's season finally on Sunday. And tonight is already the season finally of America's Next Top Model. I think it's just plain wrong. *sob*
Any who: Have a great rest of the week. SLEEP SLEEP SLEEP!

The Wire is definitely amazing! It takes a couple of episodes to get into it. I had never heard of it before, but I recently was accepted into a volunteer corp, so I will be living in the neighborhood of Baltimore that the show takes place, so a lot of people recommended watching the show before I head down there. It is very good, but frightening how realistic it claims to be.

Yeah, it most definitely sucks how all the shows are practically airing their season finales :'(

House is an amazing show, but omg, EVERWOOD is absolute love. No joke, when it was on t.v. it was the highlight of my week as well. Watched it every week like clockwork. I can't believe it got cancelled, it was such a good show. And of course, when I watched one of the rerun episodes, I got so much more out of it because I actually got the mature humour (I believe it was the episode where Ephram was doing ...more laundry than usual, the way Andy put it.) Don't worry, that wasn't really a spoiler or anything.

Emily VanCamp's in Brothers and Sisters now, which is also pretty cool.

Yeah, I've been seriously lacking sleep too; accidentally fell asleep in class again today... oops.

I can't wait to read Lock and Key; it sounds amazing. Currently about halfway through "Just Listen" right now; it's awesome!! <3

A Note From Ali
As weird as it may be, the sleep deprivation thing made total sence.
How else would you tye so many unrealisticly dramatic things into one episode!

Are you watching Gossip Girl? I don't remember you mentioning it and it's fantastic. Got better and better as the year went on.

And I have to second Lost. Good stuff.

Hi Sarah
Talking of how great it is to find a show that's new to you: because of how great you've said Gilmore Girls is in your blog in the past, I bought the first season a little while ago...and I love it! Thanks so much for 'introducing' me to it! :)

Sleep deprivation suckss. I once last nearly 30 some hours without sleep and it was kickin my butt. I started to day dream and I fell asleep while standing haha. It was for a good cause though. See, once a year my college (Penn State) hosts a 46 hour dance marathon in which the "dancers" (mostly people just standing around doing little activities) can't sit or sleep for 46+ hours. It's a weekend that celebrates how much the students have raised for childhood cancer over the past several months. I wasn't a dancer but I tried to be awake a lot to help out my dancers.

Oh wow... feeling the Everwood love. Amazing! :D Everwood is my all time favourite show! Hands down! I wept like a baby when it got canceled. Still can't believe they did that. So yeah... I would totally recommend Everwood. :)

I'm glad you got some sleep. I am an au pair living in Seattle and I take care of a 9 month old boy. So I see what sleep deprivation does to a mom. It's not pretty. Hehe...

Weeds
Have you watched the show, "Weeds" yet? Don't get turned off by the title -- this show is awesome! Season 3 is about to come out next month so you'd have plenty to satisfy your cravings after seeing one episode. It's more about the absurdness of the rich white suburban lifestyle in Cali more than it is about weed itself. Please, rent it!!
