The Friday Five! 1. Today, I head out to DC to read THIS AFTERNOON, Friday, at 4:30pm, at Politics and Prose. It's my first reading in DC, and I'm really excited, so please come out if you can! I spent yesterday afternoon unpacking and then repacking, which, if you are totally anal retentive about packing like I am, is both very enjoyable and very stressful all at once. I have lists upon lists upon lists. I am convinced I will forget something major, like my lint brush. Or my copy of Lock and Key. Or my pants. You know the drill. I know there are people who just toss a few items into a sassy carry-on, throw it over their shoulder with a jaunty smile, and then head off to the airport. Of course, I don't KNOW any of these people, because I would probably hate them. But they must exist, right? Somewhere? 2. In other book news, I did an interview over at Book Chic, where there is also a contest you can enter to win signed ARCs of Lock and Key and some other prizes. I believe there is a guest blog coming soon, as well. That's right: I'm blogging freaking EVERYWHERE right now. Here, on my Amazon pages, other people's blogs, you name it. The blog tour is more exhausting than the real one! (Okay, not really. But you get the point.) 3. Serious nerd alert: when I was in NYC, I came down into baggage claim, where all the hired limo drivers stand around with signs so their passengers can find them. I was just walking along---probably obsessing about what I'd forgotten to pack--when one sign caught my eye. It said CUSACK. And okay, so there are probably a million Cusacks out there, but since I was in New York, I was convinced it was John Cusack. So much so that I seriously considered just, you know, hanging around for awhile to see if he came strolling by, and probably would have if 1) I wasn't late already and 2) was a little bit nervous airport security would find me suspicious. So, I never found out if it was him. But can you imagine if it had been? Best.Celeb.Sighting.Ever. Sigh. 4. Also in NYC, I had some time to kill in the airport, so I went into a little store that sold toys and stuff for kids, thinking I'd bring something home for the baby. I picked out a book---it's about peek-a-boo, her favorite thing right now---and plastic car that pops when it rolls, and was on my way to the register when I passed an entire rack of Sesame Street characters. Now, we haven't really watched any TV yet (I'm sure you're shocked, but it's totally true) but I do love Sesame Street, so I figured I'd pick her up something. But then I had to choose. Bert? Ernie? Big Bird? Grover? Elmo? I mean, how can you even decide? In the end, I went with my favorite: Bert. I know, most people like Ernie better. But Bert is so my type. A little nervous, a little controlling. He'd never forget his lint roller, but would worry endlessly that he might. I would like Sasha to grow up to be more like, say, Big Bird, all happy and wise, but for now I just feel a little bit of comfort whenever I see Bert hanging out in her toy box. Is that totally selfish of me? Probably. But there it is. 5. Finally, for a number five, another five things: My Shortlist. Regular readers of this blog will know how hard it was for me to pick ONLY five things to recommend. I was getting all High Fidelity about it, freaking out that I would leave out something major and then not be able to sub it back in. (Hello, Bert!) Anyway, in the end I just picked the first five things that popped into my head when I thought about stuff I was really loving right now. Also, I have this feeling that if I keep mentioning Ben Lee in interviews and blogs and stuff like this, he might JUST somehow stumble across it and find out how much I love him. Which is so stalker-ish it's creepy. Still, worth a shot, right? |

On April 25th, 2008 01:00 pm (UTC), an anonymous reader commented: A Note From Ali It must be really cool to do a reading in DC! I actually visited there, exactly a month before your reading which I was pretty bummed about, seeing as I have always wanted to meet you. Last year I actually wanted my mom to drive me up to NC for my birthday so that I could go to a reading. -Ali |

On April 25th, 2008 03:58 pm (UTC), an anonymous reader commented: Dazed and Confused Thank you, thank you for loving Dazed and Confused! Some people haven't even heard of it when I say that I love it. The summer after I graduated from high school, my friends and I would watch that movie over and over and try to match each character's personality with one of our friends. I was the girl that was always in the background rolling her eyes and making comments. :) I lived near Austin (where the movie was filmed) for about 4 years when I was in college and some of my friends were in Richard Linklater's (the director) movie The Newton Boys. They ended up at a keg party at Matthew McConaughey's house. They played spin the bottle with Ethan Hawke and said that Matthew smelled really bad, was extremely drunk and very annoying. Hmm...this is a long post. Sorry! I guess I just got so excited about Dazed and Confused that I rambled on. Now I have to go watch it and repeat every line as it is being said. :) Have a great weekend. Can't wait to read Lock and Key! Amy in Houston |

On April 26th, 2008 06:16 am (UTC), an anonymous reader commented: sarah, I just finished Just Listen about five minutes ago ( aka 2AM Eastern) and I must be honest it's the most moving book I've ever read..even though I haven't been around all that long. I'm thinking it had such an impact on me because I know that come the future, I could end up as any of the Greene sisters whether it be Annabel, Whitney, or Kristen given my circumstances. That by the way, scares the crap out of me (excuse my french). Owen, by far is my favorite character (Sumner in a close second) mostly because being honest is one of the most challenging struggles in my life, and I am positive I will notice when I tell white lies to get out of soccer practice or say I've done my homework. What I am trying to say is, I liked you're book a lot. Sincerely P.S. I know this is supposed to be about your blog, but I thought I'd give you some feedback on my enlightenment. |
On April 27th, 2008 03:23 am (UTC), an anonymous reader commented: Question? I have noticed in atleast two of your books (This Lullaby and Lock and Key) that you kind of negativley mention jehovah's witnesses and I was just wondering, is there something you have against them or do you just think it makes your books complete to say negative things about people's religion? I love your books but seriously do you have to put those snarky comments in there? |
On April 27th, 2008 03:33 am (UTC), an anonymous reader commented: I just wanted to say that I love the fact that you incorporate each of your previous novels into the newest ones. It is so comforting and it's nice to know that the characters we (and you) fell in love with are still out there, still okay. Whenever I read a little nod to an old character, I get this really happy feeling and go... "YES!... Keeping the moon!" or whatever book the character's from. So anyways, thanks for doing that! p.s. just finished Lock and Key in 2 days... it was amazing and please never stop writing these books |
On April 27th, 2008 06:15 am (UTC), an anonymous reader commented: Old Friends! Hello! So... let me tell you this story. I am a HUGE fan (as everyone else has stated a million times). I have read, recommended, and own all of your books. I work at my school's Writing Center and this year I won the award for "Person who would most likely give a Mister Universe award to a fictional character" based off of my sa-wooning for not only Mr. Rochester and Mr. Thornton, but for Wes, Owen, and Norman. With this being said, you should understand the pain I was going through when the book came out and I was a)penniless and b)had to focus on studying for finals. I tried to console myself by begging my friends to tell me how much they enjoyed the book-- but then hushed them if I thought they were going to say too much. Finally, today, I broke down. I went home, collected some TV series I have on DVD that I don't watch too much anymore.. went to FYE, and sold them for money to buy your book :) Then, I proceeded to ignore finals for the next 8 hours as I laughed, cried, and developed a new fictional crush on not just Nate, but also on Jamie. I LOVED your characters and I love your writing. I was so happy to see all those old characters in your book that I had both grown to love (Mallory and her friends, Annabel on the radio, Starr, Queen, Bert and Kristi) and did not like so much (Rogerson! bleh!). It was perfect. I was not disappointed. Thanks so much! |

On April 27th, 2008 06:01 pm (UTC), an anonymous reader commented: Lock and Key! I just want to say, I just finished Lock and Key about 5 minutes ago, and I ABSOLUTELY loved it. There is just something about your writing that makes me feel so good. I have read all of your books and I have felt such a strong connection to every one of your characters. I always have a sort of melancholy feeling when I finish one of your books for the first time, because I feel like I have lost a friend. But then, I open up another one of your books to find that your other characters pop up in your other books. Even if you don't specifically name the characters, I know it's them and I love knowing that they are still together! Lock and Key was fantastic and I cannot wait for your next book!!!!! |
On April 27th, 2008 07:28 pm (UTC), an anonymous reader commented: Sarah, I don't know if you answer questions on here from fans(I just found this website out not long ago) but if you do, I'd like to know what your favorite book you've written was and why? I am a HUGE fan! I've read all your books(except Lock and Key cause I haven't gotten to go buy it yet) and I absolutely love them! You are sooo talented! Much love. |
On April 27th, 2008 09:19 pm (UTC), an anonymous reader commented: concerning your book lock and key Hi Sarah Dessen!! My name is Jessica, I'm 15 yearsold and I'm a big fan. I've recently purchased your book and I was shocked at what I read at the beginning of the book. The insult on Jehova's Witnesses and the reaction of ignorant people that don't listen to the "profound literature" left me with a bad taste in my mouth about the type of writing you do. I hope you consider this comment and think twice before insulting someone's beliefs in one of your books. |
