Just a quick reminder that I'm doing a live chat today, Thursday, at 3pm EST, at the Readergirlz site on MySpace. I have never done a live chat before, and am just hoping I can type fast and not look like too much of a dork.

In related news, Barry Manilow is TONIGHT, and I am entirely too excited. The first concert I went to was back in 1984 (!): I saw Billy Idol at Cameron Indoor Stadium on the Duke Campus. Since then, I've been to a few more, mainly in high school, when I saw Pink Floyd TWICE as well as Yes and Sting. The last show I went to was Dar Williams a couple of years ago. So, it's been awhile. I know people, like my friend Cameron, who live and breathe music and go see live show as often as their time and budget allows. Clearly, I am not that kind of person. But come tomorrow, I will be a person who has seen Barry live TWICE. Step back!

Finally, the other day the phone rang, and it was a number I didn't recognize. I answered anyway. "Is Colin there?" this kid's voice asked. I said he had the wrong number. He said, "No, I don't. This is Travis. Is Colin there?" I said, "No, sorry, there's no one here by that name." He said, "Yes, there is, this is Travis." He was really determined that I was wrong, which made me wonder what kind of person thinks someone wouldn't know who, exactly, was living in their house. Still, I was trying to be nice, so I told him our number and asked him which one he was trying to call. At which point, he hung up on me. Which annoyed me more than him thinking I was an idiot. So much so that I almost called him back---had the number on the Caller ID!---to ask if Shirley was there, and then argue the point when he said no. But because I am thirty-seven, and not seven, I did not.

Although it was hard to resist. Truly.

Have a good day, everyone!

I think you would have scared that kid if you had called him back.
Who says 37 can't have some 7 sometimes?

Pink Floyd and Sting
You know, I loved you before for your great books and putting Pink Floyd references in your books (The Truth About Forever)... but the fact that you have been to TWO Pink Floyd concerts-- snap-- that's just amazing! I'm begging my dad to just take me to the Roger Waters concert in April! And I REALLY want to see Sting in concert too!

I've had similar experiences with phone calls. Once, someone actually called me on my cell phone. He was also a child, and it sounded like he was munching on something. "Hi, mom?" I was about 12 at the time, so I said, "Um, no... sorry, but this isn't your mother." Luckily he didn't argue with me over it. He just said "oh" and then hung up. At the time I thought it was a little strange that it was on my cell phone, though, and not my home phone.

Can't wait to see you on the live chat! :)

That's Annoying
Hey Sarah,
That's annoying that that kid didn't believe you knew who lived in your own home! Gosh. That's good that you didn't retaliate.
Have a great time at Barry Manalow. My mother loves him! LOL!
I hope all is well!
Much love!

That story about the phone call with the little kid really made me laugh ahah. I so wish you called him back. Really though, who would continue to argue that they called the right number? When I was a little kid and dialed a wrong number, I hung up because I got scared ahah.
Have fun with the live chat!! & at the concert!! :)

Hey Sarah,

I'm logged into myspace and reading the live chat right now, but for some reason none of my posts are going through. SoI hope you don't mind if I leave a quick question here instead!

In you post about John Irving, you mentioned that you named Owen Armstrong after Owen Meany, which is actually something I had been wondering about. But I also wonder if the irony in the size difference between the two was intentional? It just seemed too perfect to be a mistake.

Hope you can answer. Have a kickass time at the show tonight, and cheer loud for my song! :)

I had someone call me like that too. When I said whoever it was they asked for didn't live there they acted like I was joking and trying to trick them.
People are weird.

I'll bet if you'd actually called him back and argued with him he would have learned a valuable life lesson. Being a jerk over the phone is not cool at all, in my opinion. If you are going to be a jerk, at least be one face to face. I wonder if he felt dumb after hanging up...
Have a great time at the concert!

Ohhhh my gosh! So, I was sitting here watching Gilmore Girls Season Six when our cell phone rings...now, our cell phone is only for emergencies and when my father travels, so I was worried that someone had died. So I picked up the phone and said, "Hello?"

There was this guy on the line who sounded a LOT like my uncle...I mean, he even did the long random pauses between phrases like my uncle does. So the guy goes, "Hello...how are you?"

"I'm good," I say, "How are you?"

"Oh, no. I think I have the wrong number."

*longggg pause on my end* "Oh."

"Who is this?"

"This is Adrienne."

"Oh, yeah. I have the wrong number. I'm sorry, Adrienne."

"No problem," I say.

"It was nice talking to you."

"Yeah, you too." And then I hang up.

Then, I come over here and log onto the computer, and HAH! A phone story! Crazy coincidence, dontcha think?

I hope you have TONS of fun with Barry...my school actually choreographed the Copacabana for choir one year :) Also, you should check out Cheryl Wheeler's "The Phone Song." I think you'd like it :P

Have a good week!

Hehe.
I wish I'd seen this entry before our chat at Readergirlz today... but comments are good too, right?

Anyway, about your wrong number call... I've wrong-numbered people on purpose with my friends for fun, and though I've never done the "yes, this is the right number" line before (we tend to just jump into a long story and then listen to how the person interrupts - or listens to - us), I wouldn't be very surprised if that kid was playing you on purpose.

It's funny to hear the thoughts of the person on "the other end" though!

Maybe the friend he was calling has a mother who likes to play practical jokes and pretends that he has called the wrong number? So that when he called you and you said it was the wrong number, he thought his friend's mom was just playing a trick on him? (It's possible, I guess, that on the phone, you sound like his mom)

Or maybe he was certain his FRIEND was playing a trick with him, somehow?

I dunno. I prefer to believe my story. Yay for goodness in human kind! ^_^

Just Listen
Though this has nothing to do with the entry you posted, I just wanted to say that JUST LISTEN was a truly amazing novel. From the first paragraph to the very last sentence of this book I felt like I was Annabel. To say the least, I bought this book on Tuesday and finished it 15 minutes ago.

Authors like you and the novels you write remind me, page after page, why I enjoy reading so much.

Whenever I recommend your books, the first thing I tell my friends is how shocked I am that someone who isn't sixteen or seventeen years old can en-body a character who is that young and still sound so genuine.

Thank you for your novels. They are truly works of art.

The Colin/Travis incident reminds me of a Lorrie Moore story in her collection Birds of America. I think the name of the story is Real Estate. At any rate, this lady has disturbances in her home starting small like racoons and getting larger to an intruder. Along the way, this kid shows up at her house and asks for another little boy. The woman says sorry, no little boys live here. To which, a little boy answers behind her, yes I do. He had been living in her attic and decided to invite people over for a party one day.

That's probably a poor recount of Moore's brilliant story, but your experience reminded me of it. You've probably already read Lorrie Moore, but you should if you haven't. :)

Hope you have a nice day!

Sarah, that sucks I'm sorry that silly kid did that to you. But you really should of called back and questioned whoever answered.
That doesn't mean you are being immature. It means you want to get to the root is the issue.
