The other night, after a LOOONG day, I collapsed onto the couch in need of something. Something easy, soothing, that would not require too much thinking or work. So I put in Ratatouille, which I have had on Netflix for forever, and I just have to say that I really liked it. It was not as good as The Incredibles, which I adored, but then, I didn't expect it to be. I do say that try as I might, I still kind of shuddered whenever they showed tons of rats flowing into a house, or down a street. I wanted to love the rats as the characters they were, but it's hard to get past that whole, well, RAT thing. Still, it was very cute. And I spent the entire movie wondering who was voicing the main girl character, only to find out it was Janeane Garofalo. To which I said: where has she BEEN? i loved her in Reality Bites, and The Truth About Cats and Dogs. But I don't think she's been in much since. So that was a pleasant surprise. Almost made up for the shivers about the, um, rat thing.

In other news, I am old. This is apparent to me these days for many reasons, but especially since I joined the new mobile campaign my fab publisher has put together for Lock and Key. You text DESSEN to 36888 (standard text message rates apply, just so you know!) and get a voice message from me, as well as other messages over the next few weeks. But truly, I think I have missed the curve on texting (see old, above) as it took me, like, four tries to get the message sent correctly. Nerd alert! Now it is working, though, which is kind of fun, albeit a bit surreal. For instance, today I received a text telling me what my favorite outfit is. And it was right! Then again, it should be, as I provided this information. But still, kind of fun. Especially since the only other people who ever text me are my babysitters, and then only when they are letting me know they can't make it, so I have a sort of fear of that New Text chime. Hopefully, this will get me over it. Then maybe I can deal with the Rat Thing....

Have a good day, everyone!

Wasn't Janeane Garofalo in the West Wing or something? And I heard she's on 24. I see her on news talk shows a lot so maybe she isn't so much into acting much anymore as she is politics.

Janeane Garofalo was the voice of (I don't remember if she made an actual appearance, it's been so long) Keri Russell's friend Sally on "Felicity." Great series!

I really liked The Incredibles but I loved Ratatouille. I had the same RAT feeling but they were just so cute that I got over it quickly, I guess. I thought the true test of the film was that my boss's husband LOVED it - he's a tough sell on anything animated but she told me he was telling everyone to see it. Which really made me laugh, because, he's curmudgeonly at best.
And I feel old when I see people texting too - I'm 31 so I've definitely missed out on it - but I just don't get it. Nor do I want to pay to type all the time - I'd rather talk.

I've recently seen Janeane in Wet Hot American Summer, lol. I think she is friends with the producer... they also produced a show on comedy central called Stella, and she was in that as well.
That's where i've seen her lately.

I had the EXACT SAME REACTION. Only, I couldn't get past the rat thing, so the movie didn't work for me on that level. I would just be like, "But he's a RAT, in the KITCHEN, TOUCHING THE FOOD." And when the ceiling full of rats fell down? I almost vomited. GROSS.

i had an identical reaction. i didn't expect it to bother me so much, but throughout the entire thing all i could think was "rats. in the kitchen. touching the food." it didn't help that my mom kept screaming about it either.

I appreciated that the humans in the movie were grossed out by it as well, but still. They got over it, and I couldn't.

The rats in Ratatouille didn't really bother me, because they were animated, but the "Happy Working Song" scene in Enchanted made me itch, literally. My parents were laughing and clapping along and I was cringing in my seat, like, "There are rats in the apartment!"

OMG, the whole RAT THING gave me the heebie jeebies. The ceiling part was atrocious. I still loved the movie though, although any scene with a multitude of rats made me cringe. I also have a wild rat phobia (domestic ones don't bother me) and I get hysterical if I think there's a possibility of a rat in the walls or the ceiling.

I loved Ratatouille. I wasn't too keen on The Incredibles, but I thought Ratatouille was amazing. I'm very happy that Brad Bird won the Oscar. I think he totally deserved it.

I think what stuck with me, with this movie, was the whole "rat with a dream" message. Remy is a rat who wants to be a cook, even though the two worlds are so different, and he actually makes it. Bird even talks about that, in a few promos for the movie. That was the message that I got from it, anyway: that dreams can actually come true... even if it seems impossible.

Last night, after a long day, I collapsed on the couch with... an ARC of Lock and Key!! SO much better than Ratatouille, though I enjoyed the movie and was able to suspend disbelieve about the Rat thing. Unlike my younger days, I couldn't stay up until I finished it, but I did stay up way past my bedtime, totally sucked in. And almost cried once already, in under 200 pages. It might be a new record - usually I don't cry until much closer to the end.

I only learned how to text recently and don't really know how to text just a number like 36888. Usually I send text messages to regular phone numbers. But I'm up for trying!

Haha, my friend and I are discussing watching Rataouille for our eighth grade trip to Washington D.C. next week, so it's funny you mentioned it. :-) I don't think I'll be too freaked out by the whole "rat" thing, but I wouldn't be surprised if she is. Maybe I should warn her...?

I'm fourteen and *I* don't know how to text! Sure, most people I know do, but I'm out of the loop. So, don't feel bad! You have an excuse! I'm the pathetic one.

Very much enjoyed your PW interview. I'm a librarian and I made sure to put Lock and Key on hold. I have recommended your books to both teens and adults for several years now. Can't wait to read the next book!

I love Ratatouille! That rat thing did give me the shivers...but it was still hilarious. Me and 6 of my friends went and saw it on opening day and we were in the theater with a bunch of little kids and we were definitely laughing the loudest...it was awesome. :)

Movies
I love both those movies! I like both of them equally i think... I can't decide. My slow, but loyal brain is still pending that... people have been asking and I tell them I don't know... they've been asking actually about all of the Disney Pixar films... which one i like the best and all I say is... i dunno... i would have to be completely sure to choose which one is my favorite because they are all so wonderful.
