It's always nice to get a little good news on a Monday, although I am scared to even post this link for fear of jinxing it: according to at least one report, Friday Night Lights may get another season after all. Can I just say: please, please, PLEASE let this be true? I am keeping my fingers crossed. (And thanks to the reader who passed this link along: what would I do without you guys?)

In other news, I got to go to the movies AGAIN yesterday. Which was great, except that the movie I picked to see was REALLY freaking depressing. It was The Savages, with Philip Seymour Hoffman and Laura Linney, and because it was directed by the same woman who did Slums of Beverly Hills, I was expecting it to be more of a comedy. In fact, I was SURE I had read that it was a funny movie. Well: not so much. The acting was fantastic, of course, and the movie really well done. But I am just too fragile for movies about death and dying these days. Maybe it's hormones, or just a new mom thing, or an end-of-February thing, or a typical Sarah Dessen neurosis thing. These are all possibilities. So while it was a good movie, it was not the best choice for me. Probably should have gone with Definitely Maybe, which I hear is good, although NO ONE seems to be talking about it. Has anyone seen it? Will it totally depress me? I need to know. I have learned my lesson!

Speaking of movies, I caught the first half hour or so of the Oscars last night, then watched the big awards on Tivo this morning. I was really happy to see Diablo Cody win, but otherwise I felt kind of disconnected, as I hadn't seen hardly any of the big movies that won. But oh, well. Hopefully next year I will be back on track AND be able to handle all kinds of subject matter without feeling the need to take a Xanax along with my popcorn. Again: fingers crossed.

Have a good day, everyone!

Definitely, Maybe is really sweet. :) It's not the best movie in the entire world, but it's an adorable chickflic, and I think you'd enjoy it. It's really, REALLY cute! ^_^

I was so happy when Diablo Cody won, too!

I too felt entirely disconnected, though Diablo Cody's speech made me misty. In fact, Joe and I played Scrabble the entire time, and except for the In Memorium montage, I barely watched.

My roommate and I saw Definitely, Maybe and we both loved it. I recommend it, though it is frustrating at points (WHAT ARE YOU DOING YOU JERK?!)... that sort of thing.

Whatever flaws Definitely, Maybe has, it will not depress you. Also, they are ignorable for how cute it is.

I've been wondering-as someone so into North Carolina, basketball, and YA stuff, why don't you watch One Tree Hill?

I also think you would enjoy One Tree Hill- it is full of all sorts of drama, the acting is pretty good considering it is a WB/CW TV series, there are amazingly hot guys in it and I have loved it since it began... Not that you need more on your plate, but if you ever catch up with everything on your list of things to see and need a suggestion, One Tree Hill is perfect for any time... :)

I really want to see The Savages. Not only because I adore Laura Linney but because the clip from it that they showed for her part of the Oscars was the only funny one in the entire category. That made me fall in love with her (and the idea of the movie) a little bit more.

Definitely, Maybe was a cute movie..I saw it with some of my girlfriends on Valentine's day. Predictable, but lovely nonetheless. I would say wait until you can see it at matinée price.

I couldn't see a movie where any one died until my son was two or so...

In fact, I started crying during COLD MOUNTAIN during the part where the jerk soldier lays the baby outside, left the theatre and called my husband to see if E was okay (he was about 8 months old I think).

You're normal.

Yay FNL!! How can we live without Riggins? (And re: the Oscars, someone should cast him in a movie, ASAP).

You might want to stay clear of La Vie en Rose, as well. Marion Cotillard gives an amazing performace, but poor Edith Piaf's life was one depressing blow after another.

I was thrilled Cotillard won. You can't help but love someone when her reaction in the press conference is ""I'm totally overwhelmed with joy and sparkles and fireworks and everything that goes like 'boom boom boom.'"

Sarah, you MUST see Once! It won for Best Original Song (for "Falling Slowly") and it is the best movie I've seen in a long, long time. Best yet, it is already on DVD, so you can watch it at your leisure. You will LOVE it, I just know!

I also watched the Oscars last night, but was very disappionted to see that Ellen Paige didn't win for Juno. Thankfully Diablo cody won though. I live in Minnesota, which is where Juno was written and filmed, so today the newscasters are going crazy over the win. I have to say, after 200 comercials for todays broadcast, it's getting old!

Hi!
Sarah, have you seen The Kite Runner yet?? I'll admit, it's heartbreaking but ... I think you should check it out. It's such an amazing movie. And book!!

P.S. Glad I read your post about The Savages. I was under the impression that the movie would be somewhat comedic based on the trailer :-X

I was under the impression that The Savages is a comedy, too. Boo for misleading previews! (Georgia Rule, anyone?) The Savages isn't playing in my area yet and maybe never will, but I will still see it though Netflix because I love Laura Linney and PSH. I'll just make sure to have some tissue handy.

Definitely Maybe is adorable, like everyone has commented above. I think the reason it's not getting a lot of press is that there are no really big names involved. I liked all of the leads, so I don't think anyone was miscast, but put Jake Gyllenhaal or, er, ooh Paul Rudd <3 or someone like that in there, and there'd be a lot more buzz about the movie.

I loved and adored "Definitely, Maybe". One of the better romantic comedies I've seen as of late. Though yes, it did make me cry, but that's just because of Abigail Breslin. That girl has a crazy ability to make me cry.

I saw "Atonement" (and "Juno" again) on Saturday. It was really good, but definitely not a happy movie.

No! DEFINITELY DO NOT go see Definitely Maybe. I really did not like it. The main guy was funny, but all of the good parts were in the commercials. The plot was rather stupid and unplanned/unexpected pregnancies as well as cheating on partners appeared extremely frequently. Instead of that one, try 27 Dresses (if you're going for something cutesy) or Atonement (if you're more into separated romance stories...) Actually, just read the book Atonement, 'cause it was SUPER good :)

Hope Sasha's good and you're not sick!

Hey Sarah!

This is kind of a delayed response to one of your posts but there's a book called Gentlemen and Players that is, for lack of a better word, phenomenal. It's a murder mystery but it's not really a mystery...just a ..plot? It's written by the same woman who wrote Chocolat (joAnn Harris, I think?) and I'm not usually a fan of murder mysteries, as I like those uplifting happy happy joy joy books but this is absolutely amazing. And I"m not really sure what kind of books you enjoy reading for leisure but this is a stay-up-until-two o'clock kind of book. Just to throw it out there....it's an option for whenever you get time to read! Looking forward to Lock and KEy!

Movies and TV
I liked "Definitely, Maybe." I thought it was cute and Abigail Breslin is amazing (you have seen Little Miss Sunshine right?) But "27 Dresses" is also fun. I love Katherine Heigl (Yay "Grey's Anatomy"). Plus if you find the time, and you don't already watch it, you should definitely check out "One Tree Hill." I watched a little bit of "Friday Night Lights" the other day, I wasn't quite sucked in but it did look good. I really enjoyed the movie. And of course I can't wait until "Lock and Key" comes out!!! I'm rereading "This Lullaby" right now and it's making me even more excited for April :)
