The Friday Five! (Special February 8th posted on February 7th edition!)

1. This week, I came to the realization that I am completely overwhelmed. Despite my tendency to try and do so, I just can't do everything I used to do, exactly how I used to do it, AND be a good mom. And when I try, I just end up doing lots of things very badly. So, finally, I've decided to streamline. Delegate. Prioritize. And just Let Some Things Go. This is so, so hard for me, as I am a total perfectionist, and at moments still think that I can do it all, if I just try a little harder. But it's no fun for anyone if I'm crazy, so maybe it's time to try a new approach. Who's with me?

2. Thanks to EVERYONE for the kind words about the first chapter of Lock and Key. I'm so excited about this book, and finally being able to start sharing it with the world. Especially because this time last year, I was in the absolute WORST part of the first draft, when I wanted to crawl under my desk and die. So if you happen to be struggling with your book right now, and feel like you'll never get through it, take heart. A year from now, everything will be different. And that's always reassuring, isn't it?

3. My Tar Heels lost to Duke, which sucked. Even worse, I stayed up to WATCH them lose, then had to get up with the baby at 5:30 am. But oh, well. The thing is, she's just so cheerful in the morning, you can't even be annoyed. I mean, who else but a baby wakes up smiling when the sun isn't even up yet? I know I don't. And yet, she's still so happy to see me anyway. Thank God for babies, they do wonders for your self esteem.

4. Today, at the drugstore, I just stood in the candy aisle, looking at all the stuff they had out for Valentine's Day, and PINED for chocolate. I don't have a point here. Just wanted to share.

5. So maybe you can tell this has been a bit of a stressful week. I was thinking about this as I was singing some songs to Sasha tonight, trying to remember all the ones I liked from when I was a kid. There are a bunch from the Muppet Movie, and then, of course, there's Free To Be You and Me, which I love, love, love. I had a hard time deciding which clip to put here, but I figured this one might help out anyone else who has just been feeling a bit defeated lately. Let it out! Rosie Grier does.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Regarding #1: It's the only way you'll survive...the other stuff can wait but that little baby will only be this age once. Hire a housekeeper and remember to nap when she does (or at least lay on the couch and read a magazine...don't work!)

Regarding #1: Easier said than done, but try...you'll feel better if you do.
Can't wait for LOCK AND KEY!

My dad sang us "Sweet Baby James" by James Taylor, "Too Ra loo ra loo ral" by Bing Crosby, and "True Love Ways" by Buddy Holly. My favorite part was when he let us change the "Deep greens and blues are the colors I choose" part of Sweet Baby James to whatever colors we wanted. My personal favorite was pink and purple =-)

I am so excited for Lock and Key to come out. I know your life is crazy with Sasha, but if you do a book tour, you should come to Southern California, because it would be awesome to meet you!

First of all, I would just like to tell you that you are one of my favorite authors!!! I love your books oh so much, and I am eagerly awaiting Lock and Key. You inspire me, becuase, while I haven't written in a long time, I would love to write a book. A children's book to be more specific. I think it is really cool how you are so down to earth even though you are a widely known and highly acclaimed author. Thanks for writing such amazing books!

I saw a lock and key necklace at the mall today and instantly thought of you and your book. I was so tempted to buy it until I realized how completely broke I am at the moment. Then, I looked at your recently updated posts only to find a link to the Lock and Key excerpt. You made my day. I can't wait to get my hands on it it!

You are amazing
I can not wait until your new book comes out. THis summer is when i started to read your book The Truth about Forever, and i fell inlove with it, then just the other day i was at barnes and noble and found whole bunch of your books, i was extremly excited. I bought this lullaby and Someone like you. I read someone like you in less than 3 days which is a record for me, i could not put the book down, i told my best friend about your book and now she is reading it and also inlove with your writing. I am going to try and read all of your books because they are so touching and fun to read. Before i really did not like reading but when i read The Truth about Forever and your other books, that soon all changed.
I can not wait to see what your next book has in store.
Thank you for making me be able to like reading agian, i appreciate it so much.

When you are a mom and a writer, you will always be half-assed at something. The trick is to rotate your half-assedness.

As a newbie mom and writer (who stays up until 4 a.m. to finish her book that's due next week!), I understand your pain. The house has dust bunnies everywhere and my husband had no clean underwear for a day. (The way he went on, though, you would've thought it was a year!) Anyway, every time I look at my baby and her early morning smiles, I know that everything else just doesn't matter. It doesn't. Crusty underwear be durned. :o)

Re: Number 1. Being a mom is like juggling chainsaws. Chainsaws that are turned on and revved up, blades roaring.

This means you want to have the fewest chainsaws required (so your ideas of streamlining, delegating, and letting go are brilliant). Also, when you drop one, as you will from time to time, make sure it doesn't land on your foot.

Now that I think about it, being an author is a lot like juggling chainsaws, too.

Lock and Key
Hi Sarah:

I finished Lock and Key a few weeks ago and LOVED it! I have now passed it on to my students who are forcing one another to READ READ READ so they can continue to pass it on. It is a wonderful story and I'm glad to share yet another Sarah Dessen hit with my kids!

Thanks,

Laura

I have to say that your entries are so much fun to read; they make my day. And I totally love that video you posted.
Sasha sounds adorable, and you're lucky she's a morning person. No one in my household is, which makes mornings that much more tedious. Let's hope she stays that way!
It sucks that you had a crazy/stressful week, and I hope it improves.
By the way, I was so incredibly excited when I read the first chapter to Lock and Key. I honestly CANNOT wait until it comes out. I'm skipping school if I have to, just so I can get it the day it comes out. :)

I loved you book because it was personal and written so you could hear the chracters thinking in my mind.
sometimes tho i think it would be cool if you picked just one conflict in a charcters life and went from there. it hads more insight into one particular issue and can be dealt with. with a lot more depth, just a suggestion tho and i loved your book. i defintly will read all you others

Hey Sarah!

I'm Kelsey and I am a big user at the message boards that were created in honor of you and your books. We have a great tiny bunch of people there. I was wondering if you could advertise it on your Journal again so we can get more people, since we don't have much.

I'd also like to tell you that awhile ago I listen to you read an excerpt of your new novel, Lock And Key, from Barnes and Noble.com It was really great. I'm so excited to read the book.

heres the address:

Thank you SO much Sarah!
