The Friday Five! (Special post-and-pre Winter Weather Event Edition!)

1. You read that right: yesterday, we had a Winter Weather Event here. Which means it snowed for, like, a minute, and there was a little bit of ice, and then rain. Up in New England, they get two feet of snow and people hardly blink an eye, but here just a smattering of ANYTHING frozen and everyone goes wild. You should have seen the local newscasters, reporting from overpasses as...rain fell overhead. Maybe one flurry here and there. They're predicting another event for tomorrow, so the whole thing is about to crank up all over again. On the flip side, bad weather of any sort means my husband makes a big mid-morning breakfast---eggs, bacon, toast---which is wonderful. So bring on the snow! (Or, rain. Whichever.)

2. Is it just me, or have the promos for that new Katherine Heigl movie, 27 Dresses, been running for YEARS now? I swear, I have never seen a movie so hyped in my life. I mean, weeks ago they were plugging this thing on Ugly Betty (not in commercials but on the show itself: Betty was talking about wanting to see it) which is sort of a disturbing trend. But the commercials seem to be running constantly, every show has the stars on...I'm kind of sick of it already, and it just comes out today. Still, it is my kind of movie, I have to admit. But if I see anything anytime soon, it HAS to be Juno. Still working on that...

3. We're in the midst of a revolution around here, as my daughter is now going to sleep early, and by herself. Which means I'm not in bed by 9, falling asleep holding her so that she can fall asleep. Last night, our entire bedtime routine was finished AND she was asleep by 8pm. Good God! I had no idea what to do with myself. Watch TV? Read? Actually have a conversation with my husband? (And yes, I realize that is the third option, which is Just Plain Sad.) After four and a half months, my evenings are kind of my own again. Of course, I still need to go to bed early, as she was up again at 2:30, but still. It's a whole new world. Or the old world, found again.

4. A lot of people have been asking for an updated picture of Sasha, and, because I am a proud mom, of course I want to put one up here. Or, like, twenty. But my husband, who does NOT like to be featured on this blog, is a little hesitant about putting her out there in cyberspace, so I'm going to honor his wishes and hold off, for now anyway. Although it is hard because she is VERY VERY cute. Not that I'm biased, or anything.

5. The Barry Manilow concert is on Sunday night, and barring a miracle, I probably won't be making it. But after writing about it, I was very pleased to find out that I am not the only Barry lover out there, and even MORE so to find out one of my very favorite writers is also a serious Fanilow. Jessica Darling might not entirely approve, but no matter: Megan McCafferty, this is for YOU!

have a good weekend, everyone!

Snow=terrible. I live in Wisconsin and we got like 6 new inches added on to all the ice and slush and dirty snow we already had. Plus it's like -5 degrees here. There's ice on the inside of my bedroom window.

Also, go see Juno. It's pretty good.

I've been meaning to pick up your novels for a while now, but since I was working on graduating picking up "for fun" reading had to be on the back burner. I just finished Just Listen and loved it. I will be picking up all your other novels soon.

We had a Winter Weather Event in OK yesterday--I love it when they tell the camera man to pan down as they scoot the flurries around with their shoes to show us how *much* has accumulated. Fascinating!

Hee. "The showman of our time." I just remembered the toilet seat cover thing.

Juno is, well, amazing. But I will say no more because I know how you hate it when movies get too hyped and then you're disappointed when you actually get to see them.

I write this with many thanks to the book fairy who blessed me with a copy of LOCK AND KEY. You've created something extremely poignant here - which is not to say you haven't before, but that rather this particular book struck me personally. When I write my review, it's going to be emotional (for me) and quite lengthy. Lost and found items and people deserve the attention. Congratulations, Sarah!

I just moved to Georgia from Michigan and the "winter mix" we had Wednesday night was a huge deal, everyone thought classes would be canceled. I get excited about snow back home because it's real, down here, not so impressed :)
There was a full page ad in our paper today for the Barry concert in Atlanta, reminded me of your post the other day :) Have a great weekend!

Oh, have you thought of taking Sasha to an early afternoon showing of Juno? Some theaters have special showings for moms and their babies, and there's not a lot of people that go on a weekday. You really need to see Juno very soon, it was sooo good!

27 Dresses looks pretty cute, but maybe because I've only seen a few of its ads. I rarely see movies in the theater though so I'll probably see it on dvd in a few months. I saw Juno, which was pretty good.

I live in MA, and so far I've had 4 snow days, all from 6+ inches of snow. It's funny when I hear about my family in Virginia saying school got canceled because of 2 inches.. it's like two separate worlds :P.

27 Dresses ads have been EVERYWHERE. I haven't seen Juno yet either..

I'm sure everyone totally respects your decision on not posting a picture of Sasha - or if they don't, they should..

Sarah,

As a fellow YA writer with a site/blog and a cutie-patootie six-month-old, I too am hesitant about putting up any pictures. My hubby's a web programmer, and he DEFINITELY doesn't want me putting pics up. In fact, I have to send out links to Shutterfly, accessed with passwords, to family members who want picture updates.

I feel your pain.

Juno was a total let-down for me. I didn't connect to it at all and I feel awful telling people that because I know it's the omg!hype!movie! of the year, but...meh. That's all I'll say.

That is one of my favorite of his songs. I just can't smile without you!!! ♥

Baltimore also had a Winter Weather Event. It was about four inches and extremely icy. Driving home from school (early dismissal!) I witnessed several dangerous almost-accidents and lost control of my car twice.
But in true Baltimore style, today it is sunny and mild, all the snow is melted. It's like my state can't make up its mind - north or south? (although technically we were part of the Confederacy but didn't secede partly because we were under martial law...just in case you wanted a history lesson).
Congratulations on getting your evenings back!

ps - I'm rereading The Truth About Forever and it has me longing for summer.
pps - sorry I'm in a rambling mood. This comment was entirely too long.

Oh, I completely understand...there was a snow advisory issued by the National Weather Service for an expected INCH of snow here in Kentucky yesterday...and the county schools were out. We had class at the university (thank goodness...a delay would have really messed up my day) but I was just beyond amused. I'm from northwest Missouri, where snow is a natural occurence, haha.

I saw 27 dresses today and thought it was pretty good! Katherine Heigl and James Marsden were very cute together. I also recommend Juno-a totally different film but quirky and lovable nonetheless. I can't wait for Lock and Key-it's been too long since your last book came out!

I live in a small town in Maryland and like 3-4 inches gets us talking. Yesterday it was blizzarding but we didn't even get out of school early. And today we went in regular time. Bummer. I love snow though so I can't wait for tomorrow, but the weather people are usually wrong so we'll see. :)

Juno was AMAZING. And as for snow, I'm crossing my fingers and watching the weather channel. But knowing the weather in NC I can't expect anything. I just can't seem to accept that "the climate is not right" which people seem to say. Anyway. LET IT SNOW, LET IT SNOW, LET IT SNOW!!!

Until last night, I too was part of the small world, population 3, that had not yet seen Juno. But I finally jumped the bandwagon and I really liked it. The soundtrack IS SO FANTASTIC GO GET IT NOW. And I just preordered Lock&Key and I also ordered the Truth About Forever in hardback because I love that book and I just want to have it on my shelf next to your other books. And if it ever snowed here, in Los Angeles, it would honestly be the end of the world. Or super global warming. Neither sound too auspicious so I kinda hope we never have a Winter Weather Event. have a fabulous weekend!

Point of View
I don't think I've ever posted on your journal - in any case I love your books, I think you're the best teen fiction writer I've ever read for so many reasons (including: your stories aren't clichéd, they all take place in the same general vicinity & characters from previous books are hidden in like where's waldo?s which is fun, the way your characters speak is just amazing and so real). That last reason is the reason I'm asking you the following question: What made/makes you decide to write your novels in first person? See I ask because this year I participated in NaNoWriMo and started to write a teen fiction book - which I'm still working on - in 3rd person. Then I made the mistake of picking up Dreamland, which I've already read, while writing (and I say mistake because it's so amazing it makes me feel inferior, so that's meant to be a compliment). See this made me want to change my story to first person because it's really in 3rd person limited and I'm wondering if it would sound better if it was in first person. So I thought, I wonder why Sarah Dessen writes all her awesome novels in first person. And now I'm asking you. Hopefully you'll be able to answer, but probably not because you're a busy person with a real life, child, book to write, and job. In any case it's worth a shot.
Thank you :)
Sincerely,
Emma

P.S I saw Juno and it was a really great movie, even though I had to sit in the first row of a tiny, packed theater.

You are amazing!
First off, you, Sarah Dessen, are my favorite author in the whole wide world. The Truth About Forever beats any other book I've ever read. I recommend it to everyone I know including my boyfriend who also-although he hates to admit it-enjoyed it. Second, I am also-after several years of teasing my mom-becoming a Barry Manilow fan. Perhaps not to the extent of actually going to a concert, but I'm coming around. I Cant Smile Without You is my absolute favorite, so that video made my ears and eyes smile. Thank you so much for being so amazing!
