The Friday Five! (Special...um, I'm-too-tired-to-think-of-something-clev 1. As my father, the Shakespeare professor, would say, all's well that ends well. The school board in Hillsborough County, Florida---where Just Listen was challenged by a parent, and called "repulsive"---has decided to keep it on the shelves. You can read about it here. Thanks to EVERYONE who weighed in with an opinion, and especially to school board member April Griffinl, who kept me posted on these events and wrote so compellingly in her blog about them. As I've said before, the best thing that can come out of an incident like this is that it gets people talking about important issues, and that definitely happened here. 2. I am beginning to think I am the ONLY person who has not yet seen the movie Juno. I have friends that have gone TWICE, even, and yet when I find myself with a few free hours, I just can't bring myself to spend them sitting in one place. I have so much I want to do when the baby is otherwise occupied: like, say, shower, and sleep, and write, and exercise, or maybe just collapse across my bed and read US Weekly. But it would probably be good for me to just escape into a movie for a little while. And then there is always the promise of popcorn.... 3. One thing I WAS really looking forward to, and now cannot, is the Golden Globes. It's my favorite award show, much preferred over the Oscars, but now because of the strike it's not happening. Which sucks for me, but even more for people who are nominated this year: I mean, what if it's your first time, maybe your ONLY time, and you don't get to do the red carpet and the oh-my-gosh moment and the acceptance speech? That stinks. Hopefully this whole thing will be resolved soon. Enough is enough! 4. My Tivo cut off during the last, decision-making moments of Project Runway this week: it was literally as Heidi was saying, "Kevin," (meaningful look) "Christian," (another meaningful look) and then.....done. Thank God for Project Rungay, which provides not only results (so don't read it if you haven't watched yet this week) as well as the best commentary anywhere. I know EW and some other places have been saying this season is kind of boring, but I disagree. My current favorites? Chris, purely for personality, and Christian for the win. We'll see what happens. If my Tivo cooperates. 5. I miss my shows. Especially this one. Please, writers and studios, can't you try to talk again? Where's the love? Have a good weekend, everyone! ![]() |

I WISH they did it here when my three-year-old was little, but they've only recently started. Some places it is called Reel Moms, others something like Baby Pictures . . . they tend to show first run movies at a discount (maybe a $5 ticket) and they leave the lights up a little and don't turn the sound quite so loud. Maybe that sounds like a nightmare to you, after all there will be babies there, but if you are itching to go to a movie you should check it out. I have another baby coming in May and I'm thinking I'll get a babysitter for the older child and go to the baby/parent movies occasionally. I think it's a great idea! Hopefully there is a cooperating theater near you. . .or you could always make the suggestion at your local place. Good luck! -Kelsey P.S. Juno is definitely worth it! |

It is one of my favorites - just read it for the second time. Very though-provoking. She weaves wonderful tales. Also, my DVR cut off the end of PR too. I think I actually yelled at my TV. But you are correct - Project Rungay is fabulous. I think I was looking more forward to their blog about the new season than the actual show itself! Looking forward to your book debuting! |

It was good to learn that the description of it as "repulsive" was not a widely held opinion, and that others also decided it has important messages to give. I think that mom is incredibly sheltered as to what kids are exposed to these days. I mean, I read Laurie Halse Anderson's Speak in middle school, around 13 years old as well as the Lovely Bones in freshman year of high school. Just Listen is so full of wonderful themes that the sexual assault part isn't overwhelming. You actually managed to write it in possible the least-graphic way possible. Besides Wes, Owen is my favorite guy in your novels. I'm glad the school board didn't ban it. And I just burned through Seasons 1-4 of the Office over break, so I really want it to come back too! I miss it more than I miss Heroes, and that's saying something. |
I'm glad to hear that the book stays put. I think the stickers will get out of hand, but I'm happy that the book got in the hands of adults who read and supported it. I felt the need to write this last night: http://slayground.livejournal.com/32580 |

On January 14th, 2008 03:28 am (UTC), (Anonymous) commented: first of all i loved just listen, like i do all of your books because you make your characters so real. you know what i mean? when i get done with a book i feel like i know them, and the thing about just listen is it talks about a serious problem not just "oh my god, did you see what she was wearing?" kind of thing like a lot of people portray teens in movies, books, etc. i know that probably doesn't make any since, but i hope you understand what im trying to say im not really making it that clear. so the point is i love all of your books and to think someone wanted to ban it is crazy. oh and by the way you're not the only person to not see Juno, but im going to go see it on wednesday.
