The Friday Five! (Special first of 2008 edition!)

1. For Christmas, I received one of those magnifying mirrors, the kind you can put on your bathroom counter so that you can see yourself SUPER up close. It was a nice present, from someone I care about, but to be honest, I just can't take it out of the box right now. Maybe there was a time when I wanted to see every pore, every line, every bit of the geography of my face, but now is NOT that time. Maybe in a few months?

2. I think there was a time when I used to go to bed, fall asleep, and then wake up. It's hard to remember, especially after a night like last night, when I fell asleep around 9:45, got up at 3, then up again at 6, then up again at 7. Whew. And yet, I still feel really rested, considering there was a time not too long ago when I was getting up twice more during that same period. You know that commercial that's always running for Johnson and Johnson, with the tagline, "Having a baby changes everything?" I used to see that and think, "Well, of course," but man, I had no idea. None whatsoever. I was someone who needed TONS of sleep just to function. I guess you can change, after all.

3. I have to give props, and thanks, to Little Willow, who did this fabulous summary of all my books on her blog. Having just had to do this for my website overhaul, I have to say it's not easy to do concise descriptions of each novel (especially if you're me, I do nothing concisely) but she did a fab job. If you read this blog but not my books, and are curious, click on over and check it out.

4. I've discovered that one way to keep my dogs quiet in the morning so the baby can sleep is by leaving the TV on for them. (You can so tell they're my dogs, right?) So while she sleeps, and I sit in here on my laptop, I can hear Regis and Kelly, which eventually turns into the Rachael Ray show. I've never really gotten into Rachael Ray before, but suddenly, now that I'm sort of having to half-listen to it, I see her appeal. She's almost got me inspired to cook again..if I had the time. For now, I'm just into WATCHING her cook, which is almost as fun, without having to shop or do the cleanup. Little steps, right?

5. Speaking of cooking, my obsession with Gordon Ramsay continues. We've been watching an episode of Kitchen Nightmares almost every night, and I'm completely fascinated with him. I wanted to post a clip from the show, but they're all so full of curse words I can't do it (they bleep them on BBC America) so instead, I'll just put up this very nice video of him making scrambled eggs. No screaming, no cursing, no being mean. Just whipping up some breakfast. Yum!

Have a great weekend, everyone!

English Project
For my English class my teacher wants us, the students, to like reading better because some of my classmate NEVER read. But I like to read books about teens. Like the books you have written. anyway my project is to do research on my favorite author, you! My teacher and I were talking and it would be so cool if I got in touch with you. Every time I see something horrifying in the magnifying mirror I have to remind myself that people's eyeballs don't magnify like that. That no one but me will ever see things that close. Which begs the question: why do *I* need to see up close like that? I don't know. But sometimes I just do.

it's remarkable how adaptive moms become to parenting--lack of sleep? no problem. juggling ten things at once? piece of cake. you know that theory that you don't notice how big your kids are getting because your muscles grow to accommodate holding them--? it's true!! and yes, little willow is great!

My sister and I got those magnifying mirrors for Christmas when we were about 7 and 10 years old-- the perfect age, when our skin was still perfect!

Did you write a book called "Last Chance"? I read all your books but I looked up your name on Google once and I saw a book called "Last Chance" but it had the same descriptionon Keeping the Moon so did you just give it a new name?

Jamie - Last Chance is what the English version of Keeping The Moon is called. Same book, different country.

eggs
sarah, this entry shocked me! well, the video did...
in 'This Lullaby', Dexter said that "everyone knows
how to make scrambled eggs, Remy, its programmed into you
at birth like knowing how to swim, or not to mix pickles
with oatmeal. You just know." But, Gordon Ramsay has just
taught me that I do not, in fact, know how to make scrambled
eggs, or, at least not properly. But now, I do. Huffah!

I have to say...
that those scrambled eggs looked undercooked and nasty but the toast looked great. Lol.

dear sarah,
i know you have praobaly gotten thousand appon thousands of comments, e-mais, and letters about all of your books ( i mean dont get me wrong, they are amazing to read and inspiring!). To me your books bring out a new side of what used to think she was a whore, who had no where to go in life and was strainded in the midddle of no where, into a kind, able to love her self for who she is kind of girl.Im currently 14 years old and go to a local school in PA. people say im the most beautiful thing they ever saw,and to boys im "drop dead gorgues". girls dont really like me and i kind of have to make friends with the boys insted of the gilr i mean i wasnt going to go through life without any friends. so im usually hanging out with boys and of course thats how i get the name whore or easy. i hate it, i wouldnt go out in public cause i was afaird something would go wrong. after i read your books i felt alot better with my self and told me self that i wasnt what those girls said i was im my own beautiful self! the reason why im writting to you is because i want to write my own book. if you could i would very much love it if you could some how write back to me and tell me what you think about me and how i should start a book! thanks alot!!!

Dear Ms. Dessen,

I've read a few of your books, and I have to say I loved them all. I'm a young writer and I recently finished my second book, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed hoping to get it published. I've been reading amazing books to help me with writing, and yours are most definatly some of the most well written. If you'd like to read my book i'd be more than happy to send you a copy, or just a few chapters if you'd like. My email is: stellarjamiee@hotmail.com I'd love to hear back.
Thank you so much,
Jamie

So you already have about 4 comments on this entry that sound like mine, and I'm sure you get them all the time, but what the hey I'm going to leave my very own "Your books rock, and without them I would be lost" comment. I spent most of this morning finishing Just Listen and it is easily my favorite books of yours. Annabel is so real and one of the only book characters I've ever shared a strong connection with. I also got a kick out of all the references to previous books, with Macy and Wes the Waffle House and seeing Remy and Dexter at Bendo. Thank you so much for your books. They are truly something special. And congratulations on having your daughter, even if I am a little late on that.

-Marisa
