My baby is sick, which is just about the most pathetic thing ever. At least when I get a cold, I know that's what it is: with an three and a half month old, it's like this weird thing they can't even begin to understand. Everytime she sneezes, she looks so CONFUSED. It would almost be funny if it wasn't so sad. But there is SO much going around right now, I think it was inevitable she'd eventually catch something, especialy since my husband's been sick for over a week now. Better now than at Christmas, I guess. Speaking of the holidays, lately I've been thinking ahead, to New Year's. More specifically, to my New Year's Resolutions. (Never too early to start trying to better yourself, right?) Anyway, my number one resolution this year is to ban the phrase "You know," from my speaking and vocabulary. Regular readers will remember that I did a TV interview last year, which they kept re-airing (to my total shame) where I used the phrase "you know" about eight hundred forty seven million times. It was TERRIBLE. I swear, it's unconscious: I don't even realize I'm doing it, which is why I asked my husband to tell me, and then proceeded to get ticked off at him every time he did just that. (Him: "You told me to tell you!" Me: "Okay, but you're telling me all the time!" Him: "Because you SAY it all the time!" And repeat, endlessly.) I would also like to ban "I mean," and the word "like," but I think that might be overambitious, so it's just "you know," for now. I have already started my efforts and let me say, it's harder than you'd think. Also on my list: improving my handwriting. Any former students of mine reading this (and I believe there are a few) probably remember my scrawled comments on their papers, which more often than not were unreadable. The truth is, there was a time when I wrote neatly (when I was in college, actually). And at booksignings, I make a point to have good penmanship, so people can actually read their inscriptions. But maybe it's because I'm so tired lately, or rushed, but lately my handwriting has become completely indecipherable. My husband squints at the shopping list like it's in Sanskrit, completely confused. Several people admitted they couldn't even read the thank you notes I sent for their baby gifts. So embarrassing! I do a little bit better when I write in all caps, so maybe I'll just switch to that. To those of you who have neat handwriting, what is your secret? (Courtney, I am looking at you!) Do you always take your time? Or can you write quickly AND neatly? I'm curious to know. So that's me in 2008. Speaking better, and writing more neatly. Not impossible resolutions, but not the easiest either. At least as of right now, I have thirteen days to get all that scrawling and you know-ing out of my system. You gotta have those last hurrahs. Change is hard. You know? |

It's hard to stop when you don't even realize you're doing it! Anyway, this year my New Years resolution is to give up US Weekly. Eeekk! Happy Holidays, Monique |

I've perfected it now, so that I can write fast and still have it look decent. It only came with hard work though. Don't fuss over it, it's not something that everyone has. Besides, who's going to care about your handwriting when they're reading one of your totally amazing books! |

Eventually, you'll be able to go a lot faster without having to think about it so much. I don't really think anybody can write at top speed WHILE doing so flawlessly... it has to be impossible. Good luck to Sasha as to getting over her first cold! Happy Holidays! |

My mind tends to think really fast and so my words are stumbling to keep up...and one phrase I always say is "I don't know..but.." but I began to get frustrated with it so I would slow my speaking down and make myself actually think about what I'm going to say before I do it..it helps a lot. For the writing thing..I dunno. Practicing might help..maybe half a page a day. I was homeschooled and one of my subjects was penmanship when I was in grade school...good times. I hated it. haha. But I look back at those books now and its amazing how well I wrote. Not that I write anything like that anymore...but my writing isn't too bad..so maybe it helped? I also think that your spacing and how the letters are written is really crucial... |

But now about the neat writting, my friends are always comlementing on my writting. (Although I would much rather type, but still) and yes you can write fast and neat. But it just comes naturally, like wrtting a novel. Just take your time, Sarah, and it will come back to you. PROMISE! Keep practising. PS. Sasha will be in my prayers. |
On December 19th, 2007 01:02 pm (UTC), (Anonymous) commented: You know It is a real teenager phrase, so I guess understandable that you still use it but definitely something worth trying to drop! The secretary outside my office (loudly and all day long) alternates between "you know" and "I'm just telling you!" I am driven insane but she has not had your educational opportunities... |

As for the writing slowing down will help some but practicing handwriting also has some side benefits. To make t's and d's without loops helps make you less sensitive to criticism while making the t bar toward the top of the stem raises your goals. An open e (tho not exagerated) makes you a better listener. Also I found a daily journal not only is good practice in writing but dreams and peeves put on paper will be something you can enjoy later or your family can. They learn about your life and you can see how your dreams were reached or changed and as for something that "got your goat" you release it when you write it down and later you can laugh about it. |

Poor thing keeps coughing up a storm, I feel so bad for her! It's so hard to see your little one sick :o( Baby tylenol for fever and baby motrin for aches and pains! Remember you can do both at the same time and alternate them every 2 hours! Also, I remember that T.V. interview that aired on PBS you are talking about. It just seemed to me that maybe you were nervous. I honestly have noticed SO many celebrities though on T.V. who are always saying "you know" to everything: It's just become the way a lot of us talk. I could see why you would want to cut it out of your vocab though -- good luck to you! I catch myself saying it a lot as well and have been trying to mentally cut back! Also, moms don't have time to write neat anymore, ha! Maybe just type everything out and print :o) Happy Holidays Sarah! Bridgette W. |
