The Friday Five! (Special 3:15 pm edition!)

1. Thanks to everyone who left comments about my last entry concerning Just Listen being challenged in Florida. Your comments were, as always, smart and thought provoking. I think that's the whole point here, in the end: that a discussion of an issue like this benefits everyone, if only because we all get to have our say. We don't all have to agree, as long as we get the chance to state our case. That's all anyone really wants, right?

2. Blog entries may be sporadic at best over the next couple of weeks, as I am TRYING to get caught up and deal with the holidays at the same time. Thank God for online shopping, is all I have to say. Also Target, which I hit this morning, leaving a sleeping baby with my husband, and knocked a bunch of stuff off my list (while also buying many things that weren't, but such is the way with Target, at least in my experience). It's still really warm here, which makes it seem like summer, not Christmas. For those of you frozen or digging out up North or out West, though, I feel for you. Stay warm! I wish I could send some of this weird balminess up your way.

3. Every year, we have a huge holiday party. We've been doing it for ages, it's one of our only serious traditions, and so we really didn't think twice about doing it this year. And yet, when I sent out my annual invites, everyone seemed really surprised. "You're doing the party this year?" they asked. "With the baby?" Which made me suddenly think I should be more nervous than I am. I mean, maybe it's crazy to have all these people here this weekend, and someone bringing a band, and expect to be able to pull it off with Sasha in tow. But it's kind of too late to change my mind, so I guess I'm just going to go for it. It can't be too crazy, right? (Don't answer that.)

4. I think I've written here before about how my dogs are, well, kind of high maintenance. They're a little crazy, bark a lot, and are basically spoiled rotten (not that this is their fault, it's ours, entirely). Anyway, we've always had this big fenced in yard for them to run in, but lately they've been so insane that we decided to follow the Dog Whisperer's advice and start walking them more. For those of you who don't watch The Dog Whisperer, he's a big believer that walks teach dogs their place, and help them to be more secure in the world and therefore behave better. I wasn't sure how much I agreed with it until we tried it and....they're so much calmer. I swear, even one twenty minute walk makes SUCH a difference. It's like a miracle. Plus, it gets me out of the house too, which makes ME less high strung, also something that benefits everyone in the household. It's a win-win!

5. Finally, in honor of the holiday, and because of my aforementioned lack of holiday spirit, last night I took drastic measures and brought out the big guns: Love, Actually. I know I've written here before about how much I love this movie, and how it always gets me in that Christmasey kind of mood. And sure enough, it worked.

have a good weekend, everyone!

I think the best part of that movie is the recital at the very end. Gets me in the spirit every time. Apparently, the little girl was actually singing that song and the director had to edit it to make it sound more like a little girl singing because she was so amazing.

Oh my goshhh, I love that part. With the little girls dancing. Haha.. So amusing. It still hasn't really snowed here in New York. It's flurried, but that was about it. It's making me feel less Christmas-y too. :/

I think you're having a very normal reaction to the holiday season. Everyone tends to get a little bit riled up and nervous around Christmas, Channakuah, New Years, etc. I'm just so happy with the fact that the baby will be able to experience all the hustle and bustle for the first time. She's probably adorably bewildered.

I love, love, love Love Actually. I've had dreams much like the one where Keira Knightley answers the door and the man she thought hated her held up signs saying that she was perfect and that he loved her. It brings out the little bit of romanticism I have left.

1) This might not be smart but...my brother goes to HS in Florida (we're only a few years apart but I went around Chicago) and his sex ed consisted of a list of 20 things to say to..well get out of having sex, one of them (and this was in keeping with the other 19) was 'real men don't have to ask' which to me could lead to rape or at least something close to it....so I think more people in Florida need to read your book... (if that makes sense--if not, I'm sorry...it's hot here and our a/c broke and I've got a migraine so I might be making less sense than I think)

4) Walks help my puppy (well she's 14 months old but definitely still a puppy) a lot, too...we have a fairly large fenced yard but she's got tons of energy and is a huge goofball but walking her really seems to help her chill out...we really do need to do it more :)

I'm living in Asheville, NC right now, and the weather really has been gorgeous! I heard it's supposed to get colder, though, but maybe that's just in the mountains. I would like snow for Christmas though!
I agree with you - everyone has the right to speak their mind. I think the idea of banning a book (especially one as great as Just Listen), is horrible, because it's cutting off literature to others based on someone else's view of it. The great beauty of books is that whether you agree with them or not, they are out there and represent new ideas. I hope those people realize this and don't take Just Listen off the shelves.

I've never seen Love Actually, but I love Hugh Grant and British men, so I really must, lol.

This Lullaby.
Hi. My name is Britany. I am 14 years old. I just finished reading This Lullaby. While I was reading it I pictured it and I really liked it. I was hoping you could write a sequel to Remy's and Dexter's relationship. Or make a movie. I know your an author and you probably have a lot to do but I was hoping you write to me. I made a profile just to write to you. Thanks, Britany Please write to me. Trust me. I am not a big reader but this school year I have read 2 good books including This Lullaby.

Re: What?
Sarah has stated before that she isn't planning on writing any sequels to any of her books, as of this moment. The closest you could get to a "sequel" to Remy and Dexter's relationship is by reading Just Listen. I won't post any spoilers, but if you enjoyed This Lullaby you'll love Just Listen :)

Challenge to Just Listen in Tampa
Dear Ms. Dressen,

I'd like to have my Tampa production company, the Alley Cat Players, host a "Just Listen" event at a nearby library in response to the challenge before the school board. We'd have professional actors read excepts from the book, an Owen's Playlist listening party, and a postcard art/comments creative session in which the attendees could create hand-drawn postcards to go to the school board.

I read "Just Listen" after hearing about the challenge (thank you for writing such a riveting story) but unfortunately, in spite of your book's popularity, the Times' online story and its comment thread demonstrate that many of the adults involved have not. The Alley Cats hope that a “Just Listen” performance event will bring the public conversation back to the text and persuade parents and school board members to read the book.

I think the fair use provision of the copyright law might cover such an event – limited use, educational intent, presented for free in a library – but may we have official permission from you? I’ll write to your publisher as well, but I hoped an appeal on your journal might reach you personally.

Yours truly,
Jo

In Ukraine there is a tv station called "tv 1000." During the day/early evening they play various American movies and tv shows. About this time last year I turned it on and Love Actually was on. It was great (as always) even dubbed into Russian (it was like I was studying Russian while actually indulging in a holiday movie). Only, this scene made no sense--for the assistant's voice was not dubbed in that glorious base with the rolled 'r's even though the song was sung in English.

Hugh Grant's facial would have made no sense to anyone who hadn't seen the original.

Anyhow...yes, this is a wonderful scene from a wonderful movie!

And your party will surely come off well, and Sasha will be able to say, someday, that you've had that party every year for her entire life.

Happy Holidays!

Just Listen banned...
I didn't get a chance to read your entries so I didn't have a chance to comment.

I must say that in my school in Indiana, the librarians have a couple of your books, but not all of them. They don't allow Just Listen onto our bookshelves either. But then again, my school tried to ban the book 1984 by George Orwell.

I just wanted to say that just because a book is banned from a school doesn't necessarily mean that the kids won't read it. Actually, I've noticed the opposite happening around here.
Every time there's a banned book, everybody gets interested enough in that book to find out why it was banned in the first place and they read it, and sometimes realize that it might have a couple bad parts but it does make up the whole of the book and without those parts, though inappropriate, the book would be worthless.

Maybe the kids in Florida will do the same.

:] Happy Early Christmas.

Kim.

So, thanks for that.

And I looooove Love Actually, I watched it twice this month already...and I'm sure I'll watch it again before Christmas, because it's the perfect holiday movie, I think.

And I'm looking forward to reading Lock and Key, and I think it's awesome that you have this livejournal available for fans to talk to you...it's really cool.

So since my last comment (I'm the one who mentioned rereading three of your books), I reread Just Listen. And it was awesome all over again, by the way.
And I live in Florida, and I apologize for my state and its stupidity. For challenging the book, I mean. It's ignorance, but what can you do really? Just know that your book is completely fine. Life isn't perfect, so books shouldn't always be about perfect lives. Just Listen involves real life situations, so it's ridiculous for them to try and act like real life should be censored...Because life isn't.

Have a great Christmas!
