So here's a question: when do you officially get in the holiday spirit? I ask because today is the last day of classes at UNC, which used to be when I did, when I was teaching. My students would hand in all their final papers, and I'd sit in my office, read them all, then do my grades, hand them in, and go buy a Christmas tree, which we would decorate while watching the Charlie Brown Christmas Special. It was like ritual.

But now, I'm not teaching. And ritual and routine have gone pretty much out the window since the baby came. So I'm just sitting here, waiting for the spirit to hit. Maybe I need to go to the mall and do some Christmas shopping? (Going to the mall always seems to be one answer to any question in my life, so sad, right?) Or bake some Christmas cookies ? (With food/eating running a close second.) There's also our annual holiday party, but it's not for awhile, and I really should have the tree up and be in the proper mindset by then. So....I don't know. I'm considering going to the Chapel Hill Holiday Parade on Saturday, so maybe that will do the trick. We shall see.

In other news, I just got off the phone with my mother, who lately has been full of great wisdoms. I was telling her about how I'm all torn about doing Christmas cards, because they're such a huge production, but at the same time I ALWAYS do them, so shouldn't I, even though I just did birth announcements, and on and on. The upshot was that I was feeling so ill equipped in general, and I said, "I think I need to just make a list of everything I can do better." To which she replied, "I think you SHOULD make a list of everything you can do better. And then I think you should rip up that list and throw it away."

It was like hitting the brakes. That moment of clarity that Oprah is always talking about. Okay, okay. Just slow down, calm down. REEEE-LAAAX. So I will make that list, and throw it out. Or maybe not even make it at all. Instead, I'll go outside, in the crisp air, and breathe in, and maybe some of the spirit will come with it. Or, not. Either way, it's okay. There's always shopping and cookies, right?

have a good day, everyone!

Let me suggest a solution to your christmas card dilemma. Take a picture of Sasha that is particularly cute. Go to Shutterfly.com (no, they are not paying me) and upload it. Pick a card style you like and insert the picture into the card. Then, upload from your contacts or type in the names and addresses of recipients. You can type a warm little "Hi there!" message for the inside flap of the card, select your recipients, pull out your credit card and voila! You are done! Shutterfly mails everything directly for you, people get to see your baby, they have what appears to be a personal note from you, and all is well with the world!

So easy!

Sometimes, I feel like my life is heading down an icy hill, spirling completely out of control, and there are eighteen foot wheelers (sp?) on every side of me. And then I read your blog, and see REEEELAAAX and just want to say thank-you.

So thank-you.

And I hope that you get into that Christmas spirit soon! Maybe read Sasha some Christmas stories. :)

Have a good day, Sarah.

I"ve been procrastinating about holiday cards too. I am going to try shutterfly this year but in hard copy so I will still have to do the regular snail mail thing.
Did you take Sasha for a photo with Santa? It's usually in a mall. A cute baby dressed for a photo with Santa and surrounded by holiday shoppers should get the Christmas spirit flowing.

I don't usually get into it until G.'s school lets out for Christmas vacation. But in Utah, people start with everything the day after Thanksgiving and if I wait until the 19th or 20th, there are no trees, decorations, or holiday goodies left, so this year we're bumping things up. To this weekend. I don't like it, though.

shopping & cookies are beautiful things. Our daughter is a September baby & we sent *only* announcements that year. This year, we have a November baby & are combining announcement w/card. Save steps!

Mannn, this is UNC's last day? I'm jealous. I have the rest of this week and then various finals throughout the next two weeks. I don't get home until the 21st! :(

I think Christmas starts after the tree lighting in New York... Or maybe like the first of December. I don't know. I'm excited for it though.

The people you would normally send Christmas cards to know that you just had a baby, therefore they probably don't expect one. Either way, they DO know that you wish them a very Merry Christmas. I say you should go shopping and listen to the mall-y Christmas music. You'll feel better.

I just got in the holiday spirit today. It's the very first snow of the season (we got out of school and everything). It's still snowing and it's just so beautiful.
We haven't done Christmas cards for the past three years because we've just been so busy. We've noticed that the number of cards we receive has declined as well. This makes me sad. What does it say about society that no one has time to send their loved ones Christmas greetings?
On the other hand, life is busy. Sending Christmas cards is a hassle especially for a new mother. Don't feel guilty about not sending Christmas cards this year. No one has time for everything. Christmas isn't supposed to be stressful, it's supposed to be a special time to spend with your loved ones.
Happy Holiday!

Don't fret: the spirit will come soon. It always hits me once I'm on winter break, and then I'm like, "It's nearly Christmas! Huffah!"

I can never seem to relax: there's homework to be done or a test to worry about or something I'm forgetting or think I'm going to forget. So then I write it down. Which always prompts me to write MORE down, because once you have the list why not finish it? And then I see how much I have to do (and how much I don't HAVE to do but wrote down anyway) and work myself into a panic. Complete with hyperventilating and tears. It's quite pathetic. So I'm going to take your mother's advice and write that list and then rip it up. After I do my homework, and panic some more about how I'm going to get all that math done before the weekend....

Hope the spirit hits you soon! In the mean time, Starbucks has really good chocolate chip cookies....

Christmas spirit
Move to a place with snow! We got almost a foot in the past week and it's so pretty outside. Setting up the tree while listening to Christmas music always puts me in the spirit. It is the ritual of going through the ornaments and remembering all the past years of hanging these ornaments.

The past few years have been kinda... off? for me, I'd say. I don't really get into the whole holiday feeling until late now - Christmas Eve, maybe even Christmas morning. I don't know when I turned so cynical or Scrooge-esque, but I guess that I have. I do however get great joys at walking around the mall, seeing the smiles on the children's faces as they anxiously wait in line for their turn with Santa, or something like that. I can't describe it.

I guess I fail at holidays this year. :P

I have to admit, it's a hard thing to do. However, try not to get too caught up in the stress and WORK that comes with the holiday. Like you said, relax. Enjoy time with your family. Also.... Don't do Christmas cards. Honestly, where do yours go once Christmas is over? Nobody will be left without a Christmas card, I assure you.
Happy Holidays!

This will sound silly, but November 1st @ 4 am. My entire family and now all my friends have what we call "The Season" which includes Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, whatever, all into two beautiful months called The Season. It starts right after Halloween ends, but we give a couple hours because Halloween is more fun at night, so by 4 am you should be done with Halloween. This year, all my friends and I on November 1st said Happy the Season!

dont even go christmas shopping yet, seems like you have enough stress.
just go to the mall and walk around, get a cup of christmas flavored hot chocolate or something, & look at all the decorations, hopefully they'll be playing christmas music, it always works for me.

Sephora
Okay, so I know you are a big fan of Sephora so, I hope you read this:

If you sign up to be a Sephora beauty insider

http://www.sephora.com/beautyinsider/

http://www.sephora.com/beautyinsider/

Completely Free if you print it out and take it to the store ( The email voucher they send you ) no purchase required.

You'll be told that you can get a free gift on your birthday; they make it sound like you have to make a purchase to get it, which is true IF you try to redeem your gift online, BUT, on your birthday you'll get a email saying....

"Thought we forgot? Not a chance. We'd never skip out on a Sephora Beauty Insider's birthday. May your day be filled with gorgeous hair, pretty makeup and a clear complexion. Be sure to get your exclusive Beauty Insider birthday gift, a luxurious 1.7 oz tube of Naked Body Butter, Bliss' cult favorite, fragrance-free, maximum moisture cream. The ultimate indulgence for birthday suits of all ages. Pick it up at your local Sephora or visit Sephora.com.

*This offer is valid for 14 days before and 14 days after your actual birthday. Limit one gift per person, per year. Substitutions may occur."

I called Sephora, and they said to take a printout of the email to my local store and I'd get the free gift with no purchase necessary; I did just that, and they handed over my tube of body butter and NINE facial moisturizer samples... and never asked to see any ID, although I don't know if you can count on that.

Usually after Thanksgiving I allow myself to start feeling Christmas-y.
However this year hasn't been quite the same because now I'm away at college.
They try to get in the Christmas spirit but it's not quite the same.
I feel that getting into traditions help me feel more in the spirit.
Mothers are excellent for advice. It seems they always know what to do.

Living where I do, it only gets mildly cold--windy or rainy, at best--so the whole 'White Christmas/holidays' thing isn't exactly something most Californians are used to. I think the beginning of the Holiday season, if you're not counting Hanukkah, is after you've taken your last final.

The minute you put down that pencil, it's like...BAM, all you can think about; going home and having a crazy end of finals night. I think for most, that's the start of the Holiday season.
