The Friday Five (special Summer Solstice edition!)

1. I am so into Cheerios right now, it's a little bit scary. Pre-pregnancy, I was not much of a cereal person at all, but now I wake up thinking about Cheerios, and have another bowl before I go to sleep at night. Adding bananas only makes me want them more. Will this trend continue once the baby is here? Something tells me no, but stay tuned to find out.

2. I cannot seem to stop watching disturbing things, even as I endeavor to make my world a stress-free, totally-in-denial-about-world-events place. Last night I watched the documentary Paradise Lost: The Child Murders of Robin Hood Hills, which for some reason I'd been compelled to order from Netflix (I think someone on my friends list was talking about it: [info]sarazarr, maybe?) Anyway, I'd seen it before, years ago, and it was very compelling, but HONESTLY, not exactly what I should be taking in right now. This weekend, it's all chick flicks and pleasant viewing, I swear. Unless I end up ordering the sequel documentary, which continues the story, and then AFTER that it's nothing but happy, happy, happy. I promise!

3. Speaking of easy viewing, I saw in EW that Silver Spoons is now out on DVD. Does it surprise ANYONE that I used to watch this show? Well, I did. In fact, in high school, I had a block of shows I watched every evening after dinner. Silver Spoons first, then an episode of Facts of Life, followed by Gimme a Break, followed by another episode of Facts of Life. I should be incredibly embarrassed to admit this, but I am not. It is simply The Truth. It's also how I ended up seeing EVERY episode of Facts of Life, even the very last ones, when the girls were, like, in their thirties and Ms. Garrett was long gone. Further embarrassing story: when I was in Toronto, on the How to Deal set, I actually told Mackenzie Astin, who played Lewis, of my FOL obsession, and how I used to watch him on the show. (He played the little orphan kid, Andy, who hung out with George Clooney's character, George, when he was on the show. Yes, THAT George Clooney. I know, I know!) Anyway, he was very nice about my total geekiness, but I could tell by his reaction that not that many people actually ever mentioned this particular credit to him. So maybe I was the only one watching. Now THAT'S embarrassing.

4. We now have four baby fish in our pond. Yay for the circle of life! Of course, we also lost a fish the other day, a silver koi which had gotten injured, then floated around looking pathetic for a few days before going belly up. Very traumatic, but I am hormonal. On the flip side, through, the babies: one we first saw a few months back, who we've christened Big Baby; two that showed up about a month ago, called the Little Babies, and then one VERY tiny one we hardly ever see I have christened The Pequeno. Every night I go out and check on them, do a head count, and then count my blessings when they are all there. I am realizing that I can't ask for a guarantee of safety for everything, forever, so I have to take these little assurances when I can. One, two, three, four. It's enough.

5. Okay, so I can't resist. I mean, I've already dug the shame hole deep: might as well leap in.

have a great weekend, everyone!

Facts of Life
Speaking of classic television, (no face aflame with shame, here) I am quasi-miffed that the complete fourth season of Facts of Life release has not even been announced. My 3-year-old knows the tune. ("You watching Facts of Life, mommy?") Great show. And Gimme A Break? Those were the days. Like Cheerios for the early TV generation.

Oh, I totally watched The Facts of Life: The Grown-Up Years.

re: Cheerios

When I was pregnant, I ate pancakes every day! I don't even like pancakes that much! And then, I think, a week or two after my daughter was born, I made some pancakes and realized that I had completely lost my taste for them. So the Cheerios thing probably won't last.

Ohmigosh. I *loved* FoL. I watched it til the bitter, Cloris Leachman end. And I still know all the words to the theme song. In fact, I frequently decide to sing them just because.

You're the first person I've ever seen mention Mackenzie Astin and FOL! This means I was not alone! I was WAY into "Mack", cutting out pictures from Tiger Beat and BOP and faithfully watching the show. I may have written some stories about us going on dates (It was my first celeb crush -- I was probably 10 years old).

The first time I realized I was watching him as an adult was when I watched "The Last Days of Disco" (GREAT movie, if you haven't seen it). It was just a thrill to have that blast from my dubious past.

Facts of Life
I'm obsessed with Facts of Life too. In college, I had just started dating this guy, and I think we were supposed to watch a movie or something, I don't remember. But, anyways, a Facts of Life marathon came on, and I made him watch that instead. And, I'm ashamed to say I sang along with the theme song. I even had it as my cell phone ringer once. I'm a dork, and no I'm not dating that guy anymore. I think the Facts of Life scared him off.

I can't believe you watched the Child Murders movie after your vow. (Yes, that was me obsessing over the West Memphis Three!) You know what's good that might fulfill your desire for a little bit of dark while still being ultimately...warm? Joan of Arcadia. I'm watching season 1 right now DVD because somehow I only started watching this show about 3 weeks before it got canceled. You're probably ahead of me and have seen it all. I mean, it's no Facts of Life, of course...

I loved Mackenzie Astin on FOL, too. Random orphan kids FTW! (see also: Leonardo DiCaprio on Growing Pains)

Re: FOL others - Jo was my favorite, and I was so jealous that she was in that camp movie with Michael J. Fox. I also loved that Natalie was adopted. I think that may have been my first encounter with an adopted character on a tv show or movie. It made me feel less odd.

Sarah--

You are not alone in your Facts of Life obsession. The cast of Scrubs gave the show a harmonic homage: http://youtube.com/watch?v=ZYU-NgvoxSw

i don't know exactly how likely you are to respond to this, but i thought i'd ask. how far along are you? i'm about 26 weeks, and i have some weird obsessions.
for example, i'm obsessed with gravy in any way, and pretty much rice. i've always enjoyed gravycovered things, but not so much rice. and i went through a cereal phase due to getting 5 1/2 gallons of milk a month [thank you wic] and nothing else to really use it with. but all of mine seem to fade away after a while.

OMG, I totally loved The Facts of Life. I used to watch like 3 episodes a day. I remember being able to catch it on the American TV channels twice, as well as the Canadian TV stations we picked up. I too saw every episode, even the special longer ones they had, like when they went to Paris and Australia. LOVED that show and I totally had a crush on Mackenzie Astin for a few years. That's a show I might consider getting on DVD simply for the nostalgia factor.

Oh I love Facts of Life! I actually really liked the first season, with all the girls living in the house. I felt so cool when they'd show up in later seasons.

"Look! It's Nancy!!"

And I find it hilarious that Molly Ringwald played Molly. But maybe that's just me. I miss Tootie's roller skates.

And I so do NOT have the theme song on my ipod. Nope. (Ok, I totally lied)

Summer Vacation
It's too bad you are missing your family trip to the Cape. Is your due date this close? The doctors in MA are ready and willing to deliver your child if necessary. Anyway, if you want to start driving, I thought you should know that Mandy Moore is giving a free concert in Boston on July 16th at the Prudential, an easy trip from the Cape (and near good shopping!).

I do love Kyle Chandler from Homefront but never seemed to be home when Friday Night Lights was on this year. The book was certainly good but that was years ago. I am relieved that it was renewed for next year.

ipod and facts of life
I love the Facts of Life! I have, relatively obsessively, watched every episode, even through the 80's when Ms.Garrett left and the set was all decked out in weird geometric patterns. I'm so happy to finally here of another fan!

Secondly on a random note, I just got a new iPod and on the back I had it engraved with "just listen", after your book, which is one of my favorites along with "Someone Like You".

Best from a daily reader of your blog,
Nita
