So after writing yesterday's entry, I had that song---Manuh-Manuh!---in my head ALL day. Even worse, I kept humming it out loud, passing on the infection to my husband, who was then stuck with it too. Finally I managed to get rid of it...until this morning, when I saw a Big Lots commercial that featured it as well. What is this, some kind of conspiracy? It's almost as annoying as the song in that Vonage commercial, which has also been in tons of others. If you don't know which one I'm talking about, I will not try to explain it, as it is even harder to get out of your head once it's in there. Of course, the true solution would be to turn off the TV for good, forever. But that seems a bit drastic, doesn't it? (Maybe just to me.) Speaking of television, I'm currently in a battle with mine. I have two DirectTV satellite receivers---no cable out this far---and both of them have been acting up lately. They randomly just freeze, midday, and need to be rebooted each time, which takes ages. (Or maybe it just feels that way, since I'm having to do it on a daily basis.) There seems to be no rhyme or reason as to why this happens, exactly, which has not prevented me from coming up with numerous theories anyway. Lately, I'm convinced it comes down to one thing: Oprah. I swear, if my Tivo is set to tape Oprah, it cuts off and freezes up. If it doesn't, it's fine. I know, I know. How would it be possible that my television is actually revolting against the Queen of All Media? Maybe it was just frustrated with all those shows she did on the Secret, or something. Who knows. At any rate, after multiple phone calls to technical support, no one seems to have any idea why this keeps happening, so my Oprah theory seems as plausible as any other. Frankly, the whole thing is making me kind of neurotic, if only because when these freezes happen, nothing gets taped. I mean, how many episodes of Intervention or The View have I missed? Maybe, though, the bigger question is whether this is a BAD thing, necessarily. Again, maybe just to me. Sigh. Finally, a request. Superstar YA author John Green (Looking for Alaska, An Abundance of Katherines) has been having some eye-related health problems lately: according to his Brotherhood 2.0 blog, things are improving, but he's still under the weather. So if you have a free minute, think a good thought for him, or leave a supportive note over on their site. You can also entertain yourself by checking out the video his brother Hank made of people putting things on their heads to cheer John up. (I was so bummed not to be included, but came in too late, since I was out of town: I had a nice shot with bananas, and everything! But you can catch National Book Award Winner M.T. Anderson, among others, very entertaining.) Anyway, John, feel better and hopefully we'll be seeing you again on your blog soon. We miss you! |

I was afraid its hard drive was failing, but my installation guy said a build up of static electricity in the unit can cause that. He said to unplug it and let it sit for about 15 minutes. I DID not take that drastic move, but I did wipe away the dust from the top of it and it hasn't happened since. (This happened in late December--maybe my Christmas tree lights were generating extra static in the room.) Another thing you could try is deliberately restarting it at a time when you're not watching or recording, so it doesn't interfere with your shows. That way you can "trick" it into rebooting at a more convenient time. If you're going to capitalize a word for emphasis, it helps to do the right one. |

I watched the newest video at Brotherhood2.0, and it seems like John is getting better! I'm so glad to know that he's getting better. My picture and my sister's was in the video, which makes me happy...and reading The Truth About Forever makes me happy too. :) Having that song stuck in my head doesn't, though. ;) Dawn |
