The Friday Five! (note that exclamation point: it's been a long week, I guess)

1. The 2007 Best Books for Young Adults have been announced, and I am so happy that Just Listen made the list. It is always nice to get named for anything, but especially something that's given by readers of teen lit who are so passionate about books. Yay for librarians!

2. So I'm watching Veronica Mars on Tuesday night, and at the very end there's this sad/awkward scene with Veronica and Piz and Logan. I'm all absorbed in it, as it's also the last scene of the epsiode, but then I notice the song that is playing in the background, and think, "Wait? Is that the Kingsbury Manx?" I was almost positive it was, to the point that I almost said something about it here the day after, but since I couldn't find anything online to confirm, I held off. Sure enough, though, it WAS the Manx, a Chapel Hill band that is very good friends with friends of mine. (What's that, one degree of separation? A half?) So exciting! If you were watching the show, and liked what you heard, you can check out the Kingsbury Manx blog and MySpace Page. Yay for local bands who done good! (And yes, I know that's grammatically incorrect. Just go with it.)

3. Speaking of local things, thanks so much to the person who left the link to this story from the New York Times about the Triangle area here in NC, as well as my hometown. I have a few quibbles with what they have to say---as I figure most locals would---including the fact that barbeque is not mentioned nearly enough, and that there ARE other great restaurants other than Fearrington House (can we get some love for what I consider the best restaurant in the Triangle, Lantern, please?). Still, it's great to see our little area get some attention, as well as have an explanation of the basketball madness for the masses. Yay for us!

4. I am still processing the events on Grey's Anatomy last night, and am NOT sure what I think of them (or what I want to happen next). But I am very grateful for the person who pointed me towards Grey Matter, the blog that is written by ACTUAL GREY'S WRITERS. How cool is that, getting the inside scoop on what inspired episodes and why they made the decisions they did? It's the coolest. But be warned: if you're a big fan, you can spend HOURS on this site. If you have work to do, stay away. But: yay for procrastination!

5. Okay, so there's really no reason to post this clip. I mean, the movie it's from is downright terrible: "Satisfaction," from 1988, starring Justine Bateman of Family Ties. Liam Neeson was in it too, and the high point was when, during one of many cringingly bad band scenes, she rocked the cowbell. But it's Friday, and we all need something, so why shouldn't it be this scene? The fact that it features Julia Roberts blowing on a jug is just a bonus. And check out that hair. Yay eighties!

have a great weekend, everyone!

Satisfaction
Should I even mention that I used to live for when that movie was on tv every year? I SO wanted to be as cool as those girls and get to be in a band in a little oceanside town! Not to mention Justine Bateman was pretty tough minus the Liam Neeson weakness. Such lame goodness.

I love Just Listen, and I was also happy to see Ned Vizzini's story made the list also. Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist was also an extremely creative story that I enjoyed over break. Thanks for publishing this list; it will give me a "Must Buy" list for my next trip to Borders.

There was a time you could see this movie on TV like 8 times a day. And I did. It was like I couldn't stop myself.

YES! i completely love grey's anatomy, and especially the writer's blog. i think it might just be the only primetime show with something like that online. but i was completely crushed by the episode. whats with merder? and the PROPOSALS!? i was literally yelling "no!" at my tv last night. what a letdown. one week after george's dad dies, suddenly he wants to get married.
cannot believe it.

veronica mars' hiatus is unhappy too. what is wrong with these tv execs lately? i am so disappointed with the world of television.

congratulations for your book! im still in the process of finishing it now.

You know, it's funny you mention the Lantern and its apparent lack of press. A couple months ago I owed my boyfriend a birthday dinner, so I took him to the Lantern. I had been there for drinks and desserts before, and I really liked it. The atmosphere in the bar in the back is so sexy and intimate, and the drinks are always amazing. But I had never had a full meal there, so I thought it would be a fun thing to try together. It was amazing. Just delightful, and my boyfriend was impressed. He's from Atlanta, and he is used to having diverse, high-end, big-city dining options. He couldn't believe that a restaurant of such caliber - from food to service to decor - was in a small town. But it is! We couldn't believe that it would be less famous than Mama Dip's (which, in my opinion, has kind of lost something in recent years). So I did some research and found that it was actually on Gourmet magazine's list of the top fifty restaurants in the country. How cool is that? The Lantern's website has some more of its printed accolades at this link: http://www.lanternrestaurant.com/pages/press.htm

Good for you for having good taste!

Oh, and deepest congratulations on your own honors.

Sarah,
I just read some of your books (Just Listen, Dreamland, Keeping the Moon) and I loved each one of them. You're probably one of my favorite authors now, because your books are just so amazing. I can relate to each one of the characters in one way.
I'm also a huge Grey's Anatomy fan so it's awesome to hear that you love the show too. I was so shocked by the end and I really want to watch the next episode.

I loved Just Listen; the music theme running through it made me so happy. I'm obsessed with music and there aren't nearly enough books with focus on it.

Congradulations on Just Listen making that list! I loved that book. I think I would have to say This Lullaby is my favorite of yours though. I was so excited to find your LiveJournal, you are my absolute FAVORITE author. I have read most of your books (I'm still missing Keeping the Moon and That Summer... I believe those are the titles). The first one I read was Dreamland and then I decided I HAD to read all of your books even though love stories and basically any book that isn't a suspense-like drama isn't usually my cup of tea, This Lullaby which like I said, isn't usually my thing, turned into my favorite book. I actually did a powerpoint on you for school =) well anyways... now I'm just rambling. Just wanted to tell you how much I ADORE your writing.

oh and p.s. thanks for posting that grey's anatomy blog. i am in love with that show.

New Fan
I've never read any of your books before. I just happened to stumble on one the other day at Target while accompanying a friend on some errands.

I'll be honest, the only reason I bought the book was because I was DESPERATE for something to read. I am ALWAYS reading something, but realized that day in Target I hadn't been reading anything for the past two weeks. I was actually freaking out about it.

Of all the books in Target, Just Listen seemed the most interesting. Mainly because my life has been so hectic lately, I seemed to be the one always lending an open ear and no one seemed to care about what was happening with me. The title actually screamed at me.

I will admit I was a little skeptical about the main character being a model.

I started reading the book last night at 11 pm, planning on only reading a chapter or two before bed. The next thing I knew it was 6 am and I had read the first 10 chapters (200 pages). I finally went to bed. I finished the book about an hour ago. This book only took me 11 hours to read. Not because it was an easy read, but because I wanted to know what happened next to Annabel. I understood her, felt like I was her.

I just wanted you to know, how much I adored the book. It was amazing. The part that touched me most was Whitney's writing. I am NOT one of those people who are emotional or cry at movies. I have never cried and constantly tease my friends who do cry at movies. But when I listened to Whitney's words, I found myself crying, surprised at how much I related to that. (One of 4 sisters & 4 brothers over here)

That scene with Whitney made me a die hard fan. Tomorrow, I'm already planning a trip to buy one of your other books. You're the only author who has ever gotten such a strong emotional response from me.

I know this was a long comment, but I felt the need to get a message to you somehow about how much I loved the book and how in less then a day you got another faithful reader.

I just want to say thank you. This book was beautiful.

Addicted to entertainment!
Hi Sarah,

Okay, I can't believe you haven't mentioned these two sites, since you're a self-proclaimed entertainment addict and all! Don't worry, I won't tell the neighbors. ;-)

First, what celeb do you most resemble? You can upload your photo and the site will scan its database to match you. Sometimes it's scary, other times its fun, but its always a great way to procrastinate writing!

Then there's my own dirty little secret - I have to hide this from my husband because he'd only torment me about it - but I can't help myself!

I can't get enough of it. Yikes, I know!

I just read your entry, and I wanted to say, I live on the outskirts of chapel hill too! About 10 minutes from town, with a beautiful open sky, and maple view ice cream about a quarter of a mile away. But technically, I'm in chapel hill. I miss the phone call to order "Tarheel Takeout" from any restaurant in town. Sigh.
