Live Blogging The Oscar Nominations!

(Or, actually, using Tivo and the pause button to do so, because I am not a fast or accurate typist. Still, you're impressed, right?)

Right now, it's 8:34, and they're about to announce. I'd like to preface this by saying that EW recently ran a list of the 25 movies of 2006 you Should Have Seen By Now, and I had only seen two: The Devil Wears Prada and Little Miss Sunshine. Which is, in a word, pathetic. But whatever. Right now they're talking to Joel Siegel, who will always, to me anyway, be the Guy Who Really Hated How to Deal. But, bygones. Bygones. Anyway, I'm busy limbering up my fingers, for both the keyboard and the remote.

Okay, they're starting. Salma Hayek is announcing (along with the president of the Academy). Best Supporting Actress: a woman I don't know from Babel, Cate Blanchett from Notes on a Scandal, Abigail Breslin from Little Miss Sunshine HOLY CRAP THAT'S SO COOL, Jennifer Hudson from Dreamgirls, another woman I don't know from Babel. (In the interest of time, if I don't know someone's name, I'm skipping them. Nothing personal!)

Best Supporting Actor: Alan Arkin, Little Miss Sunshine, Jackie Earl Haley from Little Children (YES! I'm so happy for him and I haven't even seen this movie!) Dimon Hounsou from Blood Diamond, Eddie Murphy for Dreamgirls, Mark Wahlberg for the Departed. (Somewhere, Johnny Drama is cheering.) Okay, so Little Miss Sunshine now has two noms so far. Who knew?

Best Actress: Penelope Cruz in Volver (and Salma Hayek just totally cheered for her!) Judi Dench in Notes on a Scandal, Helen Mirren in the Queen (saw that one coming) Meryl Street for Devil Wears Prada, and Kate Winslet for Little Children. Okay, that's two noms for Little Children out of three categories. Can we PLEASE get a wider release now? Please?

Best Actor: Leonardo DiCaprio for Blood Diamond (not the Departed?) Ryan Gosling for Half Nelson (serious long shot!) Peter O'Toole for Venus, Will Smith for Pursuit of Happyness, and Forest Whitaker for The Last King of Scotland. Leo's not nominated for The Departed? Color me surprised.

Best Director: Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu for Babel (thank you Tivo pause button!) Martin Scorcese, The Departed, Clint Eastwood for Letters from Iwo Jima, Stephen Frears for the Queen and Paul Greengrass for United 93 (I think that last one is a shocker, I heard some gasps.)

Best Original Screenplay: Babel, Letters from Iwo Jima, Little Miss Sunshine, Pan's Labyrinth, The Queen.

Adapted Screenplay: Borat, Children of Men, The Departed, Little Children (yay Tom Perrotta!) and Notes on a Scandal. That's THREE. I want that movie in my local indie theatre tomorrow, please!

Forgive me for skipping the foreign film announcement to catch up and fix my spelling errors. Oh, already done. Best animated film: Cars, Happy Feet, Monster House.

Okay, Best Picture. Here we go: Babel, The Departed, Letters from Iwo Jima, Little Miss Sunshine, The Queen.

The show is Sunday, February 25th. Now, bring on the commentary! What's missing? Dreamgirls not nominated for best picture or director. Joel Siegel (who really hated How to Deal!) is shocked, shocked, shocked. Brad Pitt wasn't nominated for Babel but oh, well, he's got Angie and all those kids, so you can't feel too bad for him. Frankly, I'm shocked to see Little Miss Sunshine do so well, although I am pleased.

Whew! Even with all my pauses, I'm tired. This live blogging business is tough. I'm glad I don't have to do it often. But still, the Oscars are special. Now, all we can do is hope for a quick, efficient show, free of all the usual bloating and self-congratulatory nonsense. Yeah, right.

Until then, we have other things to be excited about. Like Veronica Mars returning with a new episode tonight! No pause button needed.

Have a good day, everyone!

Oscar nominations
There were some GREAT noms--very excited to see Mark Wahlberg and Abigail Breslin. Very glad that The Departed got a Best Pic nod. However, I'm scratching my head about Dreamgirls getting skipped for Best Pic (and I don't always agree with Joel Siegel, either!) While I enjoyed The Queen, and thought Helen Mirren and Michael Sheen gave fabulous performances, I didn't think it was a Best Picture. I'd have put Dreamgirls up there before The Queen.

On the upside, I'm glad that Forest Whitaker got a nod for The Last King of Scotland. Maybe more people will see the picture. I may be the only person on the planet who's seen it, but perhaps that will change with the Best Actor nod.

I love awards season! Everything's just so glamorous.
I'm rooting for Meryl Street and Kate Winslet and Jenifer Hudson. Oh, and of course, Little Miss Sunshine.

It's snowing up here and whenever it starts snowing I sit down and read a summer book. And this year I chose This Lullaby (one of my all time favorite books). So, thank you for writing such a summery book that really just transports me out of dismal January to the greatest time of the year.

Oh my God, Sarah! I love that you live-blogged this and Little Miss Sunshine and Little Children got all those noms! LMS a Best Picture? I saw so few movies this year that I'm pulling for LMS and anything related to Tom Perotta.

No Borat?? No Children of Men? Seriously. Wow. I need to now see The Departed.

Okay, calming down now. I so heart the Oscars!

I love your comentary on the Oscar nods - I knew that you would have an opinion! I read your journal daily and love it - I am a school media specialist and love your books too, although I am at a K-8 school and they are a little too "teen" for me to put in my library, maybe someday I will be in a high school and can add you! I live outside of Atlanta and Little Children has yet to make it outside of the city here, here is hoping that it makes it to the burbs!!

Usually I have morals that tell me not to watch movies online, but in this case, the movie you want to see isn't even in theaters, so it's not really your fault. Anyway, what I mean is... if you click on the link on this page, it will give you the whole movie of "Little Children":

P.S. I agree with the Best Supporting Actor for the guy in this. He makes you scared AND sympathetic. It's weird!

Ugh, I am very dissapoined that Babel got so many nominations, I'm not surprised, just dissapointed. It was probobly the worst movie I had seen in 2006.
I am so happy for Little Miss Sunshine though!!!! I love that movie so much! It is definetly my new favorite.

Yay for Veronica Mars tonight! I have been waiting for it to come back on for so long!!!!!!

Though tonight marks the return of Veronica Mars, I'm a little anxious it will get preempted by the State of the Union, which is set to air at the same time. Let's hope the CW is one of those rare major networks that doesn't air the State of the Union, because this VM hiatus has gone on long enough!

Wow! Go tiny little Abigail Breslin! She so deserves that. Also, I completely did not see Little Miss Sunshine's Best Picture nom coming, but I am pleased.

I have a weird fondness for Leo DiCaprio, so good for him.

Personally, I didn't like Dreamgirls and thought Jennifer Hudson was the best thing about it, so... yeah.

Aaaand the best thing, in my opinion? Ryan Gosling! He was AMAZING in Half Nelson. Maybe he'll pull an Adrian Brody and win, and then say a really long acceptance speech after making out with a very surprised Halle Berry. Love it.

And I just wanted to add that Dreamgirls may not have received a Best Picture nod, but it has three out of the five noms for Original Song. Crazy.

I haven't seen most of the movies nominated, nor do I want to. But I think The Departed is brilliant. It was totally snubbed at the Golden Globes, so I'd love to see it get an Oscar. Or two. I'm thrilled beyond belief for Mark Wahlberg, who was amazing in The Departed. And I'd really like to see Will Smith get an award for The Pursuit of Happyness because he owned that role!

I'm so excited about VM tonight! Although the info about the Pussycat Dolls show was a real downer...hopefully it's not an indication of what's in store for next season. My husband likened VM to Buffy..."a great show on a not-so-great network".

is it wrong that i spent the whole time wondering why salma wore that fantabulous dress for the oscar noms at 5 in the morning and didn't save it for the actual oscars or a red carpet event?
it was so funky!

On January 23rd, 2007 05:18 pm (UTC), [info]nikiburnham replied:
I thought that about Salma's dress, too. I thought it was GREAT. But to only wear it for what, thirty minutes, tops? Sad, because you know it's one she won't get to wear again.

Maybe it was a loaner from a designer especially for the occasion?

And now I MUST see Little Miss Sunshine. I've been dying to see it, but now I'm on a mission.

Leo didn't get nominated for the departed because The Academy has the rule, one nod per actor per category, so they had to choose one and went with Blood Diamond.

Thank You!
Having neither Tivo, nor knowledge of the time/network of the announcements, it was midmorning before I saw something about Jennifer Hudson and thought, "Oh they award announcements were this morning, I'll have to get online and find out what happened." Then I was too preoccupied/lazy to find that information for myself. Cut to this evening, when I'm procrastinating my online classwork, and imagine the joy of finding everything I needed to know right here on your blog, which I was going to read anyway. I am not sure whether to feel thankful or annoyed that I now have one less thing to do before I actually get to work. . .
