The Friday Five (And yes, I did steal the name from the original Friday Five, then gave it my own spin. Credit where credit is due!)

1. All the snow is gone. It turned to freezing rain, then rain, thus ending Weather Crisis 06. Still, the local news stayed on for HOURS, covering the highway conditions and posting cute shots of people's dogs and children sledding and posing in the snow. They're saying we might get another wintry mix on Sunday. I hope the local news team gets some rest before then. They'll need it.

2. It is true: I did not discuss my beloved Tarheels getting spanked by Virginia Tech this week, probably because it was painful enough to watch, much less talk about. I have never seen so many airballs in my life. I mean, they were closer to the concession stand than the basket. Yikes. As hard as it is to take, though, I still think it's kind of a good thing for my team to get the stuffing knocked out of them when they're ranked number one. It's too early in the season to be on top: we have a long way to go. Beating Clemson on Wednesday helped, though, I have to say.

3. I have to chime in with [info]sarazarr and say that I'm kind of hooked on Dirt on FX these days. I, too, thought the pilot was a little creaky at the start, trying too hard, but once it picked up steam, watch out. I don't watch a lot of FX, though, so I was kind of taken aback by the language and nudity, not to mention seeing Rick Fox (who used to play for the Tarheels) in some rather compromising positions. What would Dean Smith say? But seriously, if you read celeb tabloids at all, this show will interest you. And even if you don't, it's worth a look. Nice to see it's not only Matthew Perry making a career on TV post-Friends, either, and I hear Jennifer Aniston will guest star later in the season. All good. All good!

4. Grey's Anatomy: I love it so much. So, so, much. But this whole Isaiah Washington thing, which just got rekindled all over again at the Golden Globes? I'm over it. I can't look at him, as Burke, without thinking about it. Maybe it's time for someone to go work for Doctors Without Borders for awhile? Just an idea. And maybe while he's there, he can get some sensitivity training. Couldn't hurt.

5. I saw Rosie O'Donnell on the View yesterday, saying how cruel the American Idol auditions have been thus far, and I really kind of have to agree. The Seattle stuff was a low point, for me. Is it worse when they're just mean from the start, or when they patronize people, go film their lives, build them all up, and then laugh at them (and, in doing so, encourage us laughing at them as well?) I know I was eager as anyone for the show to begin, but now I'm thinking I"ll just bail out until Hollywood week. I can't take the meanness. I mean, it's like being in junior high school. Maybe you're not the guy in the lunchroom picking on the kid with the high-waisted pants, or the buckteeth, or the bug eyes. You're just watching. But if you don't say anything, or at least try to stop it, aren't you just as much to blame? I think you are. And the world is cruel enough, truly, without us adding to it for the sake of entertainment. So, yeah. I think I'm out. I'll just fill the time with more worthy pursuits. Like remembering Paula Abdul, back when she was nice. Sweet. And doing Rebel Without a Cause with Keanu Reeves. Ah, yes. Those were the days.

have a good weekend, everyone!

I watched the first hour of AI on Tuesday night and felt dirty watching it. This year, especially, it seems they linger on the untalented, and hardly show any of the good singers. I, too, decided not to watch it again until Hollywood week.

I never knew they did a remake of Rebel Without a Cause. Watching that little clip, I got rather disappointed. I love the James Dean version. Keanu Reeves is nothing like James Dean...so that could probably explain my feelings.

I, too, am extremely saddened by Isaiah Washington's behavior. You'd think a show with such a diverse cast and characters would help promote tolerance, but his comments just destroy that. I'm very glad Katherine Heigl spoke up against Washington, and in defense of her friend, T.R. Knight.

I am so embarrassed to admit this, but what the heck?

I have agonized over what to do about the American Idol Issue. I really like watching the good ones' first auditions, since part of the fun of the show is seeing how the singers change. It's neat to remember Kellie Pickler on her first audition singing Kelly Clarkson. But as someone who got picked on in middle school, it's so hard to watch the producers try to make a whole nation of people laugh at those who are awkward, confused, overweight, poorly-dressed, or tone-deaf. So I DVR (obviously), and then I fast forward through the mean ones. It doesn't always get rid of the icks, but I get to see the good ones, which is so much fun.

Have a great weekend!

I'm totally with you re: American Idol, Sarah. I'm not tuning in again until the auditions are over and everyone goes to Hollywood. It's too brutal. I keep imagining those poor people seeing everything that the judges said behind their backs and the public humliation they must be feeling now that the show's airing. It's just cruel. I mean, some of these people are clearly out of their minds, but the Idol crew seemed to make an effort to draw out the worst auditions, like when they invited that one girl's mother into the room. Three simple NOs would have sufficed.

I know exactly how you feel about Isaiah Washington. Therefore, you should cheer up by watching this clip, from a hospital setting that is quite the opposite of all the IW vs. TR Knight drama.

Now that's how it should be!

Sarah... have you seen the show "House"? It is so amazing and I like it way better than "Gray's Anatomy." You should try watching it sometime—it totally sucks you in.

It's understandable that American Idol would mainly feature the clearly untalented people more often than not. That's what attracts most people to the show in the first place. I mean, I'll be honest, I'd rather watch those people than watch really good people over and over again. Also, I actually kind of sympathize with the judges. I doubt they like having to hear all of those horrible singers one after the other all day. I think almost anybody would lose their patience.

Hi Sarah,
I wanted you to know that I'm now obsessed with John and Hank Green's video blog. I burst out laughing whenever I think of "the map of the realm of Narnia," and "nanny, nanny, rich kid, funny dog." Just checking to see if you noticed (on Hank's video on Friday of Barnes and Noble) that Just Listen was in his photo. He circled it, then made fun of John for writing a novel that sits amongst so many great female writers. You probably noticed, but just in case you didn't...
Thanks for passing along this great site... I've now ordered "An Abundance..." from my favorite independent bookstore. :)

The thing I really don't like about American Idol is that you know those people have sung for somebody at home, and that somebody knew they were terrible but still encouraged them to go. Sure, they don't show that, but you know it's going on.

American Idol
I suppose it is kind of mean, making fun of the people who are trying (and failing) to sing. But I suppose if they are willing to put themselves on TV for the chance to win, even if they have no talent whatsoever, then it would be kind of like agreeing that whatever happens happens, and if they are made fun of on TV then it's their fault, because they could have seen it coming.

That's my opinion.

I would write my own Friday Five, but I will spare everyone. lol

I think American Idol has gotten to be disgusting. The thing a lot of people don't realize is that they actually take mentally retarded people and put them on. My teacher brought her daughter at the Seattle auditions, and she said that she watched hundreds of professional singers get turned away, but they accepted hundreds of mentally challenged, just to make fun of them.

I could care less if they played people who knew what they were going into, and realized that they could be made fun of, but most of these people had no idea. I couldn't stand watching it.

I totally agree about the disappointment with Isaiah Washington. On the show, he and George are my two favorite characters! I just try not to think about it as I'm watching, but that clip on YouTube from taxicagirl is amazing, it definitely made my day.

Ohmigod, watching that video puts me right back in the tenth grade, when I was discovering grunge and indie rock but still had a secret soft spot for cheesy pop. Oh Paula, and Janet, too, for that matter, whatever happened to your winking innocence and catchy, hook-laden Top-40 goodness?

I loved the Grey's Anatomy episode too! I loved seeing Heather walking again, and teared up when George's family had to disconnect Mr. O'Malley...poor Georgie. And I agree about Isaiah...I hope he realizes what he did and apologizes and that they WON'T make him leave the show! He's BURKE! I downloaded the music from the episode. Very good songs. http://abc.go.com/primetime/greysanatomy/music?pn=mguide if you want to take a look.

On a different subject, I'm currently reading Twilight by Stephenie Meyer. Have you heard of it? It's completely addicting. I'm going to read it right now. :]
One more thing..sometimes I wish that you could witness parts of my life and write about them for me. Because I can't describe things in a way that you can!

Just dropping by to say hello! I just finished reading The Truth About Forever. It was absolutely wonderful, really. Anyways, your right about the American Idol thing. There was a whole story about it over here in Minneapolis, & I've seen & heard way too many auditions. Oh, & the winter weather over here isn't so great either. It finished snowing about an hour ago & I've got to say, I'm getting addicted to Swiss Miss hot chocolate! Hope your weekend is going great. =]
