Bad news: the O.C. has been canceled.

Now, I know what a lot of you are thinking. Who cares? Well...I do. Granted, the last couple of seasons haven't been the greatest, and the whole Marissa dying thing was a bit over the top, but STILL. That first season was brilliant, and if you've never watched it you should go out and get the DVD RIGHT THIS INSTANT. You will not be sorry. And the worst part is, that this current season has been really, really good. And now it's all going to be over, in February. That's next month! I don't even have enough time to go through my stages of grief! So unfair. Personally, I blame Fox for putting it up against Grey's Anatomy AND CSI. I mean, who on earth thought it would perform well against the two most popular shows on TV? Give me a break.

*sigh*

All right, so I'm a little bitter. But I will always love Seth Cohen, no matter what. And on the bright side, maybe this means that Josh Schwartz will be turning his attention to the Looking for Alaska movie he got the rights to awhile back? Fingers crossed.

Speaking of Looking for Alaska, its author, John Green, and his brother started a video blog project in the new year. It's a great concept: a video update each day, from one of them to the other. You can check it out here. Truth? I'm already addicted and it's only been three days. But I guess that's a good thing, as I have one less show to watch now. Well, at least I'll always have season one, and my memories.

Ahh. That's nice.

have a good day, everyone!

Sarah, I read your journal everyday and we have so many common interests but I finally feel compelled to comment on this one.

I am very sad that they are cancelling the O.C.!! My friends and I had become a little disapointed in it until this present season and we thought it was really turning around! I've stuck with it all this time with the hope that it would get better, and it did, but I guess Fox doesn't feel the same way. And I agree that putting it up against Grey's (my absolute favorite show) probably hurt it a lot.

Let's hope Adam Brody and Rachel Bilson find lots of work in other venues because they are just too cute (even if they aren't together anymore)...

What?! No!! Ugh, I'm so upset... you're right... the first season was absolutely brilliant and this fourth season is well on its way to reaching that level again... but unfortunately, it's a a season or two too late. :'( As someone who never watched 90210 or Party of Five or Dawson's Creek (etc.), The OC is the show I credit for getting me into watching more prime time shows regularly, and I am really going to miss it. :( I hope that all of the wonderful actors on the show are able to find work deserving of them. Thanks for breaking the news, Sarah!

I hope there's a DVD release of The O.C.'s last season - I hadn't been watching this year because I didn't have time and my interest was waning. I do want to see how it ends, though. I agree that the first season was genius, and I felt strangely sad when I read about the cancellation (even stayed up an extra hour because I felt compelled to blog about it). However the quality declined over the last few years, hardly any shows, ever, have had even one year as good as their first one.

I am not a huge OC fan, although I did watch the first season on DVD, but I know how much it totally sucks to get a show ripped away from you (ahem, Everwood?) when it still had a few good years left.

Sigh.

Aw, come on. You're my favorite author and you're a big OC dork?! :D

I live in Orange County. Newport can be like they portray it, but only a very small part of it is. Most of Newport Beach is just normal. Clean and pretty, but normal. That's how all of Orange County is...it's like everywhere else; we have the snotty places and we have ghettos (like Anaheim). "The OC" is really deceiving.

I love Scrubs. And apparently it's doing wellish after "The Office" so that's good.

I'm not a big fan of teenage melodramas. I do dislike Fox for canceling "Arrested Development" so I can relate to seeing a favorite show get flushed.

Man, I wish the Palladinos hadn't written that ridiculous wedding storyline for Lane. If they hadn't, I'd start making some noise to bring Adam Brody back to "Gilmore Girls." That's when I first fell for that guy. *sigh*

Fox has cancelled The O.C., but word on the street is that hope is not lost for the snotty rich kids from Orange County.

The CW network has expressed interest in acquiring the show and if miracles happen, the show can be saved.

Until then, the last episode of The O.C on Fox is scheduled to air on February 22nd.

I got that from perezhilton.com, so it may not be completely accurate since Fall Out Boy did not appear on MTV New Year's Eve. But that wasn't his fault. I've never watched The OC, but it's probably a good show.

i hate that the OC is cancelled too - but i think thatey pushed everyting too fast in the first season - like seth and summer shouldn't have dated until like the middle of the second season - but i think the finale is going to be them getting married or something

From Hollywood Reporter:

It has been an eventful week for Josh Schwartz.

He has inked a new rich three-year overall deal with Warner Bros. Television and CW has given a pilot order to his drama "Gossip Girl," Schwartz's second pilot order in two days.

Meanwhile, his first series, "The O.C.," is set to bow out after four seasons. Fox said Wednesday that it will air new episodes of the teen soap Thursdays through the series finale on Feb. 22.

"Gossip," from Warner Bros. TV and Alloy Entertainment, is based on Alloy's popular book series about privileged teenagers attending elite private schools in New York.

Schwartz and "O.C." executive producer Stephanie Savage penned the project, which originally was picked up by CW in the summer with a put pilot commitment (HR 8/21). The two are executive producing with Alloy's Leslie Morgenstein and Bob Levy.

In addition to "Gossip," Schwartz received a pilot order from NBC on Tuesday for the action dramedy "Chuck" (HR 1/3).

As for "O.C.," Schwartz said the show has had a "great run."

"This feels like the best time to bring the show to its close," he added. "Thanks to the hard work of our cast, crew and writers, we have enjoyed our best season yet, and what better time to go out than creatively on top."

"The O.C." got off to a promising start when it debuted in August 2003, with a strong first season and lots of buzz. But at the start of Season 2, Fox moved the show to Thursday nights, where it faced an uphill battle and never recovered. Before this season began, Fox said that it was cutting back on the number of episodes it was ordering.

The show, which follows a group of friends and families whose lives were changed by the arrival of an outsider (Benjamin McKenzie) to their oceanside community of Newport Beach, Calif., recently saw some cast changes, with Mischa Barton departing at the end of last season when her character died and Autumn Reeser and Willa Holland coming on board as regulars. The other original cast members who are still on the show include Peter Gallagher, Kelly Rowan, Adam Brody, Melinda Clarke and Rachel Bilson.

During its four seasons on the air, "O.C." also generated buzz around the indie music featured in its episodes and spawned six soundtracks.

"O.C.," from Wonderland Sound and Vision, College Hill Pictures and WBTV, is executive produced by Schwartz, Bob DeLaurentis, Savage and McG.

Schwartz is repped by Endeavor, manager Mikkel Bondesen and attorney Joel McKuin.

aw, man! I didn't know about the cancellation. I can see why the decline though-- the story lines got really stale for awhile, with Oliver and then surfer boy practically doing the exact same thing, and Seth being the same idiot and summer being the same shallow girl, and ryan being ryan. But this year it really improved, and i was hoping for the best. sigh.

Now I must find a new show to dwell on.

It's not really that surprising that the OC was canceled. Season 1 was like heroin but after that it just went downhill. It was all about Marissa, and Mischa Barton can't act for crap.

The CW is looking into picking up The OC but it doesn't look too likely, with high production costs, Josh Schwartz working on a new movie, Rachel/Adam splitting...

If FOX had even looked at Mischa's 3 co-stars they could've saved the show way back in Season 2, but it didn't happen. They let the show become all about a girl that ultimately left the show.

i should've known you would have a million comments since this entry is mostly about the oc, and i hate to bore you with another one.

but ugh. it's just about the only thing i actually watch on tv (besides the real world, which is kindof sad) and anyone who knows me would agree i've practically made it my life! which is horrible.

i get all the music i listen to from the show, i love adam brody dearly (AND rachel bilson! but basically everyone on the show) and i'm completely obsessed.

this season was really good, too. it's such a shame.

i just found out about a book called "stop hating and learn to love the oc" or something to that effect.
i really want to read it. :]

have a good day! ♥
