![]() Whew. Okay, so yesterday was a GREAT day. I got so many nice comments here, from all of you, as well as lots of congratulatory phone calls from my family and friends. Plus, my publisher sent me flowers (thanks Viking!) which was just so sweet I got all verklempt. Then I had dinner with family, followed by my first official reading for Just Listen---see picture above---at the Regulator, where so many people came out to say hello. I was nervous at first, but once I was up there it was all good. Plus, I felt like a total rock star because Lee Smith came to my reading, and she is, like, the biggest deal author around these parts, and when I saw her in the crowd I got all nervous AGAIN, but then I calmed down. All in all, a fab night, and the best possible way to set the book out into the world. Thanks to everyone who came out, including my hardcore family contigent---Janet, Larry and Sharon--who came to my first readings ten years ago (when they were often the only people there) and were there last night as well, sitting in the back and laughing extra loud at all the funny parts. Thanks also to John Valentine, bookseller extraordinare, for putting it all together, and to my friend Barrett, who took that picture and this one, of some very dedicated fans. On the left is Lillie, who did a great job of introducing me:
I'm also very grateful for all of YOU, for the kind words yesterday, and for letting me know you'd found the book, and how you were liking it. I've heard some of you have had trouble finding it, and I'm sorry for that...hopefully if your local bookstore hasn't gotten it in yet, it will soon. And to the couple of people who relayed how they were super persistent, bugging the salesclerks to go in the back and seek it out, I say, also, thank you. And now, frankly, I'm a little bit exhausted. (Can you even BE a little bit exhausted? That's kind of like somewhat dead, or mildly terrible. But I digress.) Luckily, though, it's Friday, and it looks like, if I'm real lucky, I might get to see Ice Age 2: The Meltdown with my very favorite five year old today. Which means popcorn, too. What more can a girl ask for? Not much, I'm telling you. Not much. Thanks again for all the support, you guys are the best. EDIT: There are a few comments on this entry that contain spoilers for the book. I've deleted a few of them, just so certain parts aren't ruined for everyone. But if you haven't read the book, and don't want to know anything in advance, maybe skip the comments this time. Just a thought.... |

And, to use Owen's per phrasing, I am an "inside reference" whore and loved the subtle glimpses into the lives of past characters... especially the nod to Wes and Macy; it was nice to see that they are still running AND still eating waffles. Enjoy the ride!! |

On April 7th, 2006 06:16 pm (UTC), (Anonymous) commented: Congrats! Congrats on another great book! I loved seeing the characters from your other book, the other book that is one of my favorites. I am sitting at work behind a closed door in my office where I am supposed to be acting like an attorney when really I am trying to finish your book so that I can concentrate on work later. |

If I could afford it, I would have bought another plane ticket and visited NC again for your big release day! Oh well. So I bought my tickets to the San Francisco dinner party several days ago, and I'm very angry because since my ticket includes a new Just Listen copy, I couldn't pick it up from my local B&N yesterday! Well, I suppose that I could have, but I don't want to spend any more mulla than I really have to. The Books Inc place still says they don't have copies in yet on there website, so I have no idea when they're going to send it. Everyone is saying so much praise about your book, and yet I have to wait until it gets sent to me. That's why pre-ordering books online sucks. Anyways, that's my vent of the day, and obviously it's not your fault, so maybe I should just call up Books Inc in SF and yell at them! lol I'm sure you would encourage me to go and by a copy from the B&N place anyway. Haha. Actually, I'm beginning to think about it.... Well, have fun at all your books signings! I can't wait until April 25th! - Melissa |

We are distraught because THIS weekend was supposed to be "Stay inside and read Just Listen" weekend. Now what do we do? Watch a movie? Shop? No. These things will not do. (OK so i'm sure you have bigger things to think about like all your readings, but we just wanted you to know that we're dying here without the book). Re: Lost in Toronto! I agree ♥ Us Canadians love you too!!! I can't wait to read Just Listen. From all the comments you're getting, it sounds wonderful. & I know it's too late now, but sometime you should REALLY consider coming to Toronto. It's a great place, and meeting you would pretty much make my day. Scratch that. It would pretty much make my life :) |
On April 7th, 2006 08:58 pm (UTC), (Anonymous) commented: Canadian Releases Hi Sarah! I'm a Canadian reader who doesn't have an LJ, but I was wondering if you know when "Just Listen" is available in Canada. Our main retailer is Chapters/Indigo, and their website says the book isn't available yet. I also checked my public library, with no luck. If you could please answer this in en entry, I'd be very grateful as I don't have an email address at the present. Thanks very much! ~ Rachel On April 7th, 2006 09:10 pm (UTC), (Anonymous) replied: Re: Canadian Releases I would suggest trying a smaller independent bookstore. My Chapters didn't have it, so I went to a local store, and voila! There it was calling out my name. |

On April 8th, 2006 06:48 pm (UTC), (Anonymous) replied: Wow. I picked up Just Listen last night at the local B&N, and I didn't put it down all night until I finished it (4 hours of non-stop reading). I absolutely LOVED it!!! I completely fell in love with not only Annabel and Owen, but Whitney and Kristen as well. I could really connect a lot with this book - and not just because my name is also Anna. But I've found that also with This Lullaby and The Truth about Forever, I also felt a connection with the books deeper than just completely loving your style of writing. I especially loved the brief shot of Macy and Wes, and the little interaction with Dexter and Remy. Would you ever consider writing a sequel to either Just Listen, The Truth about Forever, or This Lullaby? I get so attached to your characters I can't bear to let them go... hehe. I got really nostalgic when reading about Wes, Macy, Remy, and Dexter, haha. Anyways, I just wanted to leave this comment because Just Listen was AMAZING and you are my all-time favorite author. I hope you keep writing forever! Thank you for a wonderful book!!!!! |
