First things first: I must echo zeisgeistLara and say that last night's Gilmore Girls had one of the best, funniest sequences I've ever seen. I am so glad I have it on Tivo to watch again. And again.

Speaking of Tivo, I spent most of yesterday in a complete technological frenzy, as my Directv receiver went on the fritz and needed to be replaced. Turns out they're trying to phase out the Tivo technology because they've developed their own, so I had to scramble around to find a new receiver with my beloved Tivo on it. Thus enused a LOOONG trip to Best Buy, where I had to corral no less than three salespeople to answer my questions, followed by a massive indecision attack (complete with panicked phone calls to my husband), after which I finally bit the bullet, bought what I needed, and came home to assume the epic task of setting it up. Now, everything is working fine, but I have had enough of wires, menus and remote controls to last me a lifetime. Still, you should have seen me talking to this one salesman, who, while I was trying to make up my mind, said, "Well, how important is it that you get this working today?" and I said, in total seriousness, "Gilmore Girls is NEW tonight!" Which made the decision that much easier, actually.

Meanwhile, while I'm dealing with the TV issues, my husband is reading. More specifically: he's reading my new book. I started it in October of 2004, finished it May 2005, and have been editing pretty much every since. Which is to say, I have lived and breathed this story for over a year now, which makes it kind of weird that he's only now discovering it. But such is my process, keeping everything secret until the book is pretty much done, even from the person who knows me best. The truth is, he likes to wait until the galleys are out, so he can see the book in as final a state as possible. But I have to say, I HATE when he's reading my book: it makes me a total nervous wreck. I used to forbid him to read them when I was in the room, I got so jumpy, so he had to read when I wasn't here, but now I'm trying to relax and just deal with it.

It's hard, though. I keep looking over at him, wondering what part he's on, and if he laughs I say, "What? What?" Or sometimes I just stare at him, which unnerves him enough to make him look up and tell me to go watch TV and leave him alone. It's a sickness, I swear. But so far, he seems to be enjoying it AND compelled enough to keep going, even when Miami Ink is on, which is a good sign, I think. Or I hope. We shall see, as he's only on page 133 right now. Not that I'm, um, obsessively keeping track or anything.

have a good day, everyone!

Reassurance
Phew, I thought I was the only weird writer who doesn't let her partner read the book until all the edits are done!

The only time I ever broke the rule was with one book where my dearly beloved did a lot of the research for me in Chinese.

I wait on tenterhooks, too, until he finishes the book, and have been known to go out so I don't bug him.

That was the double edged sword of AP English my senior year. I'd slave away on papers, hoping my teacher would give me a good grade. Turns out she was usually so impressed that she read snippets to the entire class and then pointedly say "Christen wrote this."

I'm pretty sure every single one of my classmates hated me. However, I don't have to take freshman English in college now, so I guess it all evens out.

That sounded like I'm bragging, but actually I'm not. I always hate for anything I write to be read aloud, unless I'm doing the reading.

I LOOOOOOOOVE Tivo. The characters in my current wip cater to celebrities, and at the beginning of every chapter, there are quotes by the celebs. One of them is "Screw Computers. Tivo is the best thing to come of the twentieth century."

That had to be the best Friday night dinner ever. The laughing at the retelling of what Grandma Gilmore said to Mama Huntsberger cracked me up.

your entries make me laugh :)

I'm obsessive about not letting anyone read my work too. Which is probably the worst thing a writer could ever do... but that's a sidenote. It's weird, to have other people reading what you've been working on for ages.

Haha. That's so cute about you getting all obsessed over your husband reading your book. I can see myself doing the exact same thing, except I'm not even done with my first draft of the novel I'm writing (first one ever, it's not very good, lol).

By the way, your entries have been so much more entertaining lately. I don't know why, but it makes me that much more eager to read your live journal every week day : )

I'm sooo glad the last 10 minutes were as good as they were—I was thinking it had gone downhill the rest of the time. I just loathe Logan (such a rich snob) and Paris has been quite nasty lately. The whole episode was just unhappiness all around—grandparents getting upset, newspaper getting upset, Lorelai getting upset about the wedding, etc. Luckily, it ended with the best 10 minutes of a "Gilmore Girls" EVER!

P.S. It was also fun seeing the grandparents drunk. ;)

Aww, you are so cute. That made me giggle. Mostly because you were serious, and I can TOTALLY see myself saying something like that.

Haha. I don't like anybody reading any of my writing. I always get all jumpy and nervous, and act like I don't like it at all. So I usually nonchalantly say "...I don't like it at all. I was just about to delete the whole thing before you read it." And, as I say that all I do is just hope and look for some sort of signal that it was good.

Ah, and I missed Gilmore Girls last night. =(

Your DirecTiVo may be fixable - most failures are the hard drive, and replacing that isn't hard. Just so you know. :-)

I second that about Gilmore Girls. While my friends sat there confused and irritated, I laughed and laughed and applauded its pure awesomeness.

Clearly they just aren't enlightened enough....

I can't even stress how brilliant last nights Gilmore Girls was. I feel almost silly saying that because it sounds like I'm exaggerating. The entire sequence at the Grandparents house was my favourite of course. It reminded me a lot of my house because that happens around here. Although my parents haven't gotten drunk infront of me and told me about their sassy remarks toward others. I guess we'll have to work on that.

I can't wait to read your book when it comes out.

Please keep writing! My favorite quote of all your books is from This Lullaby= "please pass me THE spoon" (instead of A spoon) funny lines like these always make me laugh out loud. You are a wonderful writer!

hi Sarah!
It's Edith Thornton from your fiction writing class a few years ago. Found your blog through a friend of mine who's in my writers' group. I'm just starting the lj thing. Anyhow, just wanted to say hi. Finished This Lullaby recently. Really liked it. Also went to a cool YA reading with Gabrielle Zevin (elsewhere) and David Klauss (dark angel) the other night so thinking lots about YA. :) I'm living in NYC & working as a copywriter for Doubleday Entertainment (formerly Bookspan). We don't have many YA titles which is a real shame. Maybe someday! Anyhow, hope you are well! Cheers, Edith

Having Others Read Your Work
Hi, I'm a writer too (I just don't have anything published yet...) and I always have one or two of my friends read my work and I can't stand just sitting there and waiting for them to read! I'm always afraid they will hate it or something and I do the stare at them until they look up thing too! Just glad I'm not the only one who does that.
Sam
