So I'm on CNN.com this morning, looking over the headlines. There's a rally in Lebanon, the woman taken hostage in Atlanta is speaking out, China is in conflict with Taiwan and.....Mario Vasquez has dropped out of American Idol. What does it say about me that this is the first story I click on? Oh, God, I don't even want to know. (In my defense, I had already been to the NY Times site and covered the headlines. But still!) Then again, it's not the first time someone's dropped out early on: remember Frenchie? Maybe Mario has something in his past he'd rather not have come out. Or, maybe he decided to just go solo. Who knows? Well, we probably will, soon enough. We shall see.

Meanwhile, my Spring Break continues. We had various events this weekend, and last night collapsed in front of the TV, at which point I realized that while listing shows that I watch last week, I forgot Arrested Development, which I have just gotten into this season. I tried to watch it once last year and just didn't get it: now, I am completely addicted. It's the smartest show on TV, just about, which is why I probably didn't get it at first (sad but true). Just really cleverly written, with these kind of circular plotlines that all eventually interconnect. Jason Bateman is so funny, and Ron Howard narrates (and Henry Winkler is a cast member: hello, Happy Days connection!). And, icing on the cake, last night Amy Poehler from SNL was on it, and I LOVE her. If EW is to be believed, this is show is constantly in danger of getting cancelled, even though it's won a bunch of Emmys and other awards. It really should be on HBO, where it would be getting huge press and attention and the props it deserves. Maybe they'll give it a home if Fox gives up on it?

Finally, on a completely unrelated note, I just have to share something I saw yesterday on the way to the grocery store. Driving into town, I come over a hill and there's a woman climbing out of a green truck that's parked on my side of the road, facing me. She's tall, wearing jeans and a sweater and aviator sunglasses and as I slow down, she walks out into the road, reaches down and PICKS UP this dead animal laying there---I think it was a rabbit, although I'm not sure---then walks back to her truck, puts it into the bed, and then climbs back behind the wheel. All with the same nonchalance I use when slowing down to pick up my paper at the end of the driveway. I mean, she didn't flinch. Or make an EWW! face. Just grabbed that roadkill, picked it up, and went on her way. Well. Kind of made me rethink all of my anxiety issues, I have to tell you. And slow down a bit and NOT make eye contact as I passed her. Yikes! I was just telling my students last week that stories are everywhere: you just have to keep your eyes open. Case in point, people. Case in point.

have a good day, everyone!

If Arrested Development gets canceled, I may literally die.

Not to be overly dramatic or anything.

Mario
Okay, maybe I'm a little dramatic...but this is my theory on Mario.

In his bio on the AI website, Mario says that he has sung with Michael Jackson before. Maybe he's going to Michael Jackson's trial to testify, or show his support or dislike of MJ. Or maybe all of the hype about the trial has upset Mario greatly, because he was one of the victims of child molestation. You never know. I hope none of this is true...maybe I'm just being dramatic, in a perverse way.

Hope you have a good week--

Caitlin

The roadkill... that's disgusting. My uncle used to do the same thing. He'd pick them up, no matter how mangled they were, bring them to his home and... well, let's just say that my aunt didn't eat supper on those nights. When I heard that she'd left him, I wasn't surprised.

The other day a bird flew into my store. Everybody freaked out, because the bird was kind of going berserk. I had no idea what to do, and was kind of hiding from it and looking for a broom or something to shoo it out with. All the customers were cowering in a corner. It was chaos.

THEN this random customer just GRABBED IT. Plucked it out of the air, walked through the store and let it go outside.

I was stunned.

Amy Poehler is married to one of the guys on Arrested Development and she was on last week for a few seconds if you looked closely. I had to rewind on the TiVo in order to double check! I just got into that show but it's great!!

Dead Rabbit
Hey Sarah, love your books!
About that woman who picked up the dead animal: I'd like to think that she, like me, is a major animal lover that decided to caringly scoop the poor little thing up and take it to a more respectful place so that it doesn't continually get run over again and again. However even I, a major animal lover as previously announced, wouldn't pick it up with my bare hands since there may be diseases, insects, etc. that I just wouldn't want to infect myself with. So, hopefully her intent was a sweet and loving one, rather than a need for dinner. Which is, after all, disgusting and offensive.
SO, lets try and give this woman the benefit of the doubt and just hope that next time she wears gloves or something. :)

As well as Amy Poehler, Arrested Development has everyone but Matt Besser from New York's Upright Citizen's Brigade, which just tips it over the edge for best comedy on TV.

Yes! Go Anwar! Frenchie didn't drop out, she was DROPPED. lol For Adult site wasn't it? And then Corey Clark for "abusing his sister" and then Donnie Williams for a DUI. Guess they really need a good IDOL for American Idol.

I love you Sarah!! Can I have an autograph? lol

P.S. Maybe the lady worked for animal control and it was part of her job to go out there and pick up the poor animal. Don't jump to conclusions until you have all of the facts.

Mario was my absolute favorite!!! Usually, I like all the contestants pretty equally, but there was just something special about Mario. I am so sad to hear that he's dropping out. But I guess I would be more sad if he was forced to leave like some past contestants. I hope Seacrest gives us some more info on tomorrow night's show!

Road kill
My dad once picked up a dead squirrel from the side of the road and decided that he would send it to the taxidermist and have it stuffed. He is waiting for it to come back then he says he will put it on his mantle in his house. I was completely disgusted when he told me and thankful I wasn't with him when he did it! Just a funny (and gross) story!

Have a great day!

Roadkill
That roadkill story is nasty. I mean, I saw a skunk in the middle of the road the other day while I was walking (it was an absolutely BEAUTIFUL day out) and it was squashed right down the middle. And since I'm an emotional person I imagined every single on of my dogs (I have 6) in that same spot and I almost cried!

Your books are awesome Sarah! Keep writing!

A friend of my sister actually had a special "road kill" license that allowed him to legally pick up road kill and do with them whatever he wanted, which I think was normally skinning them for the pelts. Of course, he lived up in the mountains, so he was mostly interested in bigger animals like deer and such; I doubt he was going after many squirrel pelts.

This is the same guy that was convinced the world was going to explode or something on Jan 1, 2000, so he bought a bunch of property (by a stream) in Montana and built a bunker and tried to convince everyone else to do the same. Montana real estate did pretty well that year.

Hello!!!
Hello this is Teleri Gee. I am a HUGE fan of yours. I just thought that I'd let you know how much you impacted my life with your book Someone Like You. I loved all your other books, Dreamland, This Lullaby, That Summer, Keepin the Moon, and This Lullaby, but Someone Like You was by far my favorite. I could relate to having a best friend that you always depended on, for I have one and she's the one I lean on. I go to Denver School of the Arts for Creative Writing, and am on the way to pursueing my dream of being an author. I have wanted to spend my life writing ever since age 4, when I became engaged with reading. I now am obsessed with writing, now that I spend 2 hours a day studying my form of art, and have many authors that have encouraged me on my way. Ms. Dessen, you have changed my life forever. I also loved how in your hit book Dreamland, that her new best friend had a "theme song" with her jingling bracelets. In my school library, you can't even get any of your books anymore, for they are all ALWAYS checked out. I also think that you have impacted almost every girl in my schools' life. Thankyou for listening, I am honored that I had a chance to read your book.
