You know how lately, it's the big trend among celebrities to have teeny tiny little dogs? Like Paris with Tinkerbell, and Britney with that really scared little chihuahua at the Billboard Music Awards (it looked completely traumatized, but then again, I probably would be too, under the same conditions). I've gotten so used to seeing this little dogs with their bejewled collars, and Louis Vuitton carriers, living a much more glamourous life than the rest of us could even imagine, that I've sort of forgotten that they are really, well, dogs. Until the other day. Now, out here in the country, some people let their dogs run loose. I do not: we have a fence, and our dogs stay in it. When we first moved out here, there were always a lot of dogs running around, especially in the morning, when a group of them would pass through the yard at about the same time each day, not unlike the women from the neighborhood who power walk up and down the road. (Except that this seemed slightly less organized, and they were, um, dogs. But you get the idea.) Anyway, in the last couple of years, the dogcatcher has been coming around a LOT more, and most people have built fences. Every once in a while, though, you see a few dogs running free, as I did the other day. Not only were these dogs loose, but they looked like something out of a movie. A movie like Homeward Bound, or something. Picture this: a really big, long-haired dog, a golden retriever mix, and a very small chihuahua or possibly miniature pinscher. Together. Like best friends. Big dog plods along, sniffing, small dog races ahead, then back, then ahead again. I'd seen them once, from a distance, as I sat up here writing, but the other day they were right in my backyard, sniffing around the compost heap. When they saw me standing in the window, they both looked up, all friendly, and wagged their tails. This little dog is LITTLE. He can't be more than eight or ten pounds, and he looks like you could scoop him up with one hand. You just don't SEE little tiny dogs out fending for themselves that much. I mean, out here we have vultures. (No, I'm not kidding.) And hawks. When Monkey was a puppy, one of the first days we had him, I took him out in the backyard and while he was walking around (he was really little, about six pounds) I saw this big shadow, just circling overhead. Sure enough, a hawk had spotted him. After that, I made sure he was never alone outside. But this little dog seemed fearless. He did not strike me as the type to be content at the Billboard Music Awards, or wearing a cute Burberry sweater. Instead, he looked like he might, if the occasion called for it, kick your ass. My own dogs were going nuts looking out at these two, dying to get outside and sniff and bark and slobber, but I kept them in, and eventually the dogs moved on. I still can't get over that little one, though. I mean, isn't he worried about hawks? Guess not. Who says living in the sticks isn't exciting? Or glamorous? Not me..... Have a good day everyone! |

And she's still so spry and curious, very fit and active. I keep waiting for something bad to happen, like she'll get really sick or something, but I'm becoming more and more convinced that she will outlive us all. Actually, I was talking about my dog with someone at lunch today. I was telling him about how I pamper Chloe, and how she lives this semi-luxurious life which basically consists of sitting on a cushion for 22 hours a day. And he made the comment that for Americans, we give our pets better lives than most of the people in the world will ever know. Like, enough food, shelter, someone to love on them, etc. I mean, light bulb moment here! That's so true! Kind of gave me new perspective, you know? -Amy |

My husband's dog, Rocky, who bears a striking resemblence to the jack russell on Frasier, even though he isn't a J.R., is getting older..still pretty spry, yet a mindless eating machine..well, he is very old, 14 yrs. in a few months. I thought for sure I wouldn't want anymore pets after him..but i want to get another small dog, one I can scoop up in one hand. Question: Do you read a lot of the newer YA authors work out there? I'm just curious, seeing as it's my chosen genre to write I try to read them, but I haven't in a while. I'm curious to know what authors you like. Have a good day, Eileen Re: Small Dogs & YA Question I didn't used to read much YA, to be honest...mostly because I fell into the genre without knowing what everyone else was doing, and I feel it's kind of a if it's not broke, don't fix it, kind of deal. That said, I have been trying to explore it more when I can: I really like Megan McCafferty, and this summer I read the first Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants book, as well as one of the Georgia Nicholson books (and a Gossip Girl, as well). I think next year, when I'm not teaching, I'd like to read even more. There's so much great stuff out there. It's with Amber Tamblyn, Alexis Bledel, America Ferrera, and Blake Lively. Personally, I think it's gonna be great. There's also gonna be a movie on Gossip Girl. I'm not sure when it's coming out, but I think Lindsay Lohan is in it. |

I would just like to tell you that i love your books, and you've been my favorite writer for about 4 years now. but i've gotta tell you- the backs of your books do not do them justice. i had never noticed this before because i was originally introduced to them by a friend, but my other friend, to whom i gave This Lullaby for Christmas (it's my favorite), gave me this little insight. She told me she's seen your books at Border's, but after reading the back, passed them over. But once she read This Lullaby she realized what she had been missing. I then read the back of This Lullaby, and instantly agreed with her. Your novels are so much better than the summaries explain. For example, the back of This Lullaby says something about Dexter, the boy who was determined to change her [Remy]. or something like that. but after actually reading the book, the reader finds out it's actually because of him she changed, not because he was trying to change her. and that is just one thing. there's also Remy finding herself and finding out what love actually is and that it does exist. (something i myself am trying to figure out, and the reason i love Remy so much) i really hope this makes sense, because it does in my head and i hope i communicated it well enough...so i strongly advise to whomever writes the backs of your books to, well, do a better job. (but i dont mean that in a bad way!) -Sarah |
